The OpportunityThis is a remarkable opportunity for a transformational leader to advance the world class Division of Infectious Diseases at Mayo Clinic’s Destination Medical Center (DMC) in Phoenix, Arizona. The incoming Division Chair of Infectious Diseases will lead a robust and growing division ripe with opportunity for further growth and innovation across all of Mayo Clinic shields: clinical practice, research, and education.
The Division of Infectious Diseases is a well-established referral practice for complex care of infectious diseases in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Currently comprised of a team of 8 physicians and 3 advanced practice providers (APPs), the Division is actively recruiting and plans to expand to 11 physician faculty and 4 APPs by 2025. The Division also houses a fellowship program with four fellows, two per year, as well as highly trained, dedicated support staff and two ID pharmacists.
The Division supports the nation’s largest solid organ transplant program in the country, including heart, liver, kidney, pancreas and soon lung. The Division collaborates closely with the Hematology-Oncology group, part of the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCCCC), to manage complex care of patients undergoing stem cell transplantation, chemotherapy, and CAR-T cell infusions. Additionally, the Division directs programs in infection control and prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, outpatient antimicrobial therapy and microbial and regenerative therapeutics. Uniquely, Mayo Clinic Arizona has one of the largest comprehensive clinics and multidisciplinary programs treating Valley Fever, or Coccidioidomycosis, including an institutional biobank.
Over the past six years, Mayo Clinic has made significant investments through a historic capital expansion project to nearly double the size of the Phoenix campus, expanding both the physical and technological future of health care, inclusive of practice, education, and research activities. Mayo Clinic in Arizona has strong collaborations with Arizona State University, one of the leading science and technology institutions in the country. Additional investment is underway in building the Discovery Oasis, a joint collaboration between Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University, which will create a 120-acre biotechnology corridor fostering collaboration to advance groundbreaking solutions to humanity’s most complex medical challenges. Faculty are engaged in clinical research and education at all levels.
The Ideal CandidateThe Division Chair of Infectious Diseases will be a progressive, visionary, and selfless leader with contributions in leadership, teaching, recruitment, and a significant research portfolio. The Division Chair of Infectious Diseases will work to optimize the creation of novel strategies to grow the Division and continue to enhance the three mission areas of the Mayo Clinic shields. The Chair will assess gaps within those mission areas and identify future opportunities and needs, serve as a member of senior leadership to establish research and education priorities, and provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the Division, including the positive representation of the Mayo enterprise, nationally and internationally, creating collaboration opportunities and bridges across the institution.
Qualifications
  • MD, DO, or MD PhD and Board Certified in Infectious Disease
  • Academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor
  • Previous leadership experience in an academic setting
  • Scholarly accomplishments appropriate for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with a minimum of 10 years of experience post-fellowship
  • Outstanding clinician with a successful track record of high-quality clinical outcomes
  • Exhibits empathy, humility, and compassion
