Job Summary
The Substation Civil Design Engineer Consultant role is a mid-senior level, part-time, contract position. This position is fully-remote, allowing you to work from home, as work is needed. While working alongside a team of experienced electrical engineers, this position is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of civil and structural components related to substation projects. Duties/Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Design and develop structural plans and specifications for substation projects, including foundations, steel structures, and support systems.
  • Conduct structural analysis and calculations to ensure the integrity and safety of substation components.
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and blueprints using software tools such as AutoCAD and STAAD.Pro.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure cohesive and integrated substation designs.
  • Perform site assessments and inspections to evaluate existing structures and recommend necessary upgrades or modifications.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., AISC, ASCE, IEEE).
  • Develop project timelines, budgets, and resource plans to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Provide technical support and guidance during the construction and commissioning phases of substation projects.
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for clients and stakeholders.
  • Stay current with advancements in structural engineering and substation design practices.

Requirements
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of a substation project lifecycle at the utility level
  • Excellent technical communication and detail-oriented work practices
  • Proficiency in substation civil engineering design, including:
    • Site grading, drainage systems, and site development
    • Topographical specifications, surveying, and geotechnical site boring identification
    • Knowledge of permitting procedures, right-of-way, property lines, and easements
    • Steel structure analysis and design
    • Foundations and oil containment design
    • Development of Spill Prevention Countermeasures and Control (SPCC), Preparedness Prevention and Contingency Plan (PPC), and Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP)
    • Substation access and roadways design
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Capable of supervising and training new team members
  • Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Experience with structural analysis software, such as RISA Foundation, MATHCAD, LPile, Hilti PROFIS, and RISA 3D
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards, including ASCE 7, AISC, ACI 318, EPRI, ASTM, NESC, IBC, RUS 1724E-200, and IEEE
  • Proficiency in additional structural analysis software, such as STAAD Pro and SAG10
  • Experience with design software like AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Civil 3D
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited university in Civil or Structural Engineering required
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in Civil/Structural design of high voltage 15-500 kV substations
  • PE license required, must be eligible for licensure in IL, CO, MD, DE, MN, WI, TX, NM, AZ, and other states as needed.
