ANEW is focused on changing the culture and demographics of industries that have historically not been diverse or inclusive.

POSITION TITLE: SHOP INSTRUCTOR

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Vice President of Training programs, this position's primary responsibility is instructing pre-apprenticeship students. This position is responsible for the quality and outcomes of the Pre- Apprenticeship Construction Education at ANEW. This includes ensuring clients completing pre-apprenticeship have the qualities and technical abilities to enter a family wage career in the construction industry. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Instructor

  • Teach assigned classes following the approved curriculum.
  • Provide classroom lectures and hands-on training to the program participants.
  • Manage classroom environment and time management.
  • Maintain a safe classroom environment for all students.
  • Assess student progress and report each cohort.
  • Maintain train-the-trainer certifications.
  • Maintain PACE tools and instructional aids.
  • Take students on job site tours and apprenticeship visits.
  • Communicate with surrounding contractors, partners, and apprenticeships.
  • Teach and reinforce proper workforce behavior.
  • Conduct training in accordance with the program safety policies, reporting injuries and ensuring program instructional training meets the requirements of OSHA & WISHA standards.
  • Work collaboratively with all ANEW staff toward student success and the success of ANEW.
  • Ensure the Program is meeting organizational and program policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the quality of the pre-apprenticeship program and meet annual graduation, placement, and retention rate goals.
  • Works with team to place students in family wage positions.
  • Monitor and review the progress of students and conduct individual evaluations.
  • Attending all staff meetings as required by the supervisor.
  • Conduct and log timed agility drills.
  • Assist with all the maintenance, care, and operations of the training center.
  • Be able to assist with the math curriculum when needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM / REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to join Laborers Union under a collective bargaining agreement or a retired tradesperson.
  • Have at least 3-5 years of work experience in the building trades or construction.
  • Experience teaching a diverse population of students and maintaining a learning environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic, racial, and social justice and an understanding of the ways institutions and systems hurt communities of color through both conscious and unconscious bias.
  • Experience managing diverse staff, as well as experience in developing and implementing staff training and professional development.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program and attainment of journey level status (or any combination of the above) and relative experience and relative work experience, or
  • Two years of work experience providing the following: recruitment, employment placement services, instruction and counseling to adult or youth populations, and working with ethnically diverse populations.
  • Experience working with individuals with barriers to employment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with unions and the apprenticeship system.
  • Proven success in working with teams as well as independently with minimal supervision.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Background screening through Washington State Patrol
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to get to multiple work locations on a routine basis.
  • Proof of citizenship or other authorization for employment
  • Continuation of employment is contingent upon successfully performing the work described.
  • Continuation of this position is dependent on the achievement of performance goals and the availability of funding.
  • Valid driver’s license – some driving will be required.
  • Proof of Insurance

Work Location: ANEW Training Center

Work Schedule: Mon-Thurs or Tues-Fri 6:00 am – 4:00 pm (this is 4 10s with the possibility of 5 8’s)

Reports to: VP of Training Programs

Anticipated Start Date: A.S.A.P

SALARY

This position is a nonexempt position within the Laborers Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is grant funded and continuation of this position is subject to funding.

BENEFITS

The successful candidate is expected to serve a 90-day probation period. Benefits are bargained through the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Laborers.
