The Ann Arbor YMCA Child Development Center is hiring a part-time Child Watch Lead Team members. We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. That's why our child care programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids, the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Child Care Director and in accordance with the mission and purpose of the Ann Arbor YMCA, the Child Watch Lead is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of the Child Watch program. The Child Watch Lead will work directly with the Child Care Director to develop programs and activities that cater to children ages 4 months to 12 years. The Child Watch Lead will supervise and work alongside other Child Watch Team Members to ensure the safety of children in our care, as well as maintaining the Child Watch program and it’s space.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide program supervision using positive guidance techniques.
  2. Trains new Child Watch staff 
  3. Ensures Child Watch staff follow departmental policies and procedures. 
  4. Oversees the check in/check out procedures.
  5. First line in handling customer service issues.
  6. Ensures proper conduct of all patrons in Child Watch. 
  7. Develop and implement program activities that provide youth with experiences in the developmental areas of physical, social, emotional, and intellectual.
  8. Prepare the classroom environment to enhance each participants play through active exploration and interaction with adults, peers, and materials in learning centers such as dramatic play, blocks, science, math, games/puzzles, books, music, etc.
  9. Maintain program and classroom space, including ensuring a clean, sanitary environment, and reporting any equipment/supply needs or maintenance concerns to the Child Development Director.
  10. Maintain appropriate adult/child ratio based upon ages of children in Child Watch. 
  11. Possess working knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws and proper reporting procedures.
  12. Participate in the support and evaluation of Child Watch policies.
  13. Plan activities that are developmentally appropriate for youth participants.
  14. Communicate, maintain, and model expectations to all youth and staff.
  15. Provide opportunities for children to develop social skills such as cooperating, helping, negotiating, and verbally communicating to solve interpersonal conflicts.
  16. Encourage social, academic, and personal growth in youth.
  17. Assist in maintaining individual records for all participants in a current and up to date status.
  18. Become familiar with children and their families in order to provide quality service.
  19. Attend and assist in facilitation of scheduled staff meetings and in-service trainings as required.

20. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Child Care Director.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent. Some college preferred.
  • At least one year experience working with children, such as day care or babysitting required. Teaching experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, flexibility, and an ability to work in a team-setting are required.
  • Must have certification in infant, child and adult CPR and First Aid or obtain in the 1st 30 days. 
  • An interest and ability in developing and implementing creative programming with the goal of teaching YMCA core values is necessary.
  • A patient, high-energy, and goal-oriented attitude is essential.
  • Ability to be responsive to the needs, wants, and interests of both the parents and youth enrolled in the Child Watch Program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  2. Must be able to assist an average size child up to 50 pounds.
  3. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  4. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  5. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  6. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  7. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency

WORKING HOURS:

PM LEAD: M-F 3pm-8pm. Weekend shift at least once/month
