GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reports to the Director of Ancillary Services. Performs phlebotomy and follows established aseptic blood drawing procedures and techniques. Performs routine, timed and emergency phlebotomy and venipuncture work; determines best site for venipuncture, draws blood, and labels; performs related clerical and support services within the laboratory.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supports the Mission and Vision of RML Specialty Hospital by demonstrating RML's Core Values of Service, Teamwork, Accountability, Integrity, Respect and Stewardship (STAIRS) in all actions. Promotes a positive patient/customer experience by exemplifying the principles of the Language of Caring in all interactions with patients, families and coworkers.
2. Promotes a safe environment for the patient by identifying patient using the patient's name and date of birth prior to venipuncture. Verifies patient with Nursing when a Blood Bank specimen is being drawn. Collects blood specimens from patients, checks patient identification, checks work list and labels to determine tubes that are needed using appropriate technique. Labels blood tubes with patient name collection date, initials, and time.
3. Maintains the confidentiality of the patient's medical information verbally, online and in print. Complies with all hospital policies related to computer use and system security. Complies with HIPAA guidelines.
4. Ensures that specimens are prepared for the courier within allotted time; records initials on the label on the patient specimen. The blood is then processed appropriately. Completes daily lab log and tracking log.
5. Observes the patient during blood drawing for any adverse reaction, (hypoglycemia, faintness, dizziness, hyperventilation, nausea, excessive bleeding etc.) and notifies nursing/medical personnel immediately.
6. Makes daily rounds in lab processing areas, replenishes stock, clean counters and centrifuges.
7. Supports a safe work environment for self and others by reporting unsafe conditions,
and by using appropriate safe work practices such as proper body mechanics, safety needles, sharps disposal, and PPE, etc.
8. Complies with OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen standards and adheres to all Infection Control precautions, including handwashing and use of PPE, etc.
9. Provides services to adult and geriatric patients. Demonstrates appropriate clinical interventions based on patient's age and developmental status.
10. Bring issues and suggestions for patient care, work flow or process improvement to the department manager. Participates in department and hospital performance improvement activities.
11. Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS
Minimum Preferred
Skills and Abilities 1. The technical skills necessary to perform correct aseptic blood drawing techniques and obtain blood specimens with minimal delay and pain to the patient. 2. The interpersonal skills necessary to positively interact with patients, families, physicians, and other members of the health care team. 3. Organizational skills to draw a large quantity of patient specimens and prepare for the courier under time constraints.
Knowledge and
Experience 1. High School Diploma or equivalent 1. One year on the job training in venipuncture.
License and
Certifications 1. Phlebotomy certification
Working Conditions 1. Constant standing and walking 2. Work is performed in a patient care environment 3. Must be flexible to cover shifts at either RML Hinsdale or RML Chicago, as needed. 4. Exposure to blood borne pathogens and infectious diseases.
