JOB SUMMARY
Provides instruction for Visually Impaired students by developing, selecting and modifying instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of students utilizing Braille, large print and technological devices. Nature of work includes supervising students in a variety of school-related settings; keeps attendance and grade records, and conferring with parents, students and staff regarding progress/problems. Frequent travel is required between multiple AACPS sites.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, prepares and presents lesson plans, assignments, instructional materials for Visually Impaired students including provision of support to "mainstreamed" students, curriculum development, pilot testing of new materials, development of awareness/orientation programs for staff members, coordination of inter- and intra-agency support services for students and their families.
  • Demonstrates and uses teaching strategies to present subject matter to students.
  • Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and the emotional development of children.
  • Maintains discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning.
  • Confers with parents and students regarding progress/problems of assigned students; arranges and participates in teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences as necessary.
  • Performs functional vision and learning media assessments.
  • Interprets eye medical reports as they related to educational environments.
  • Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings; and provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals, objectives and methods of students and their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Blind/Visually Impaired from a regionally accredited college or university required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of school organization, goals and objectives with special emphasis on teaching techniques related to providing instruction to visually impaired students.
  • Knowledge of current trends, research in field of specialization and methodology in instructional techniques.
  • Knowledge and facility of literary Braille, Nemeth Code and technology.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Ability to deal effectively with students, staff and parents.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in technical areas of instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Professional Eligibility Certificate (PEC) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
  • Hold or be eligible for Braille Transcriber Certificate (Literary Braille Transcriber) issued by National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS), Library of Congress preferred.
  • Hold or be eligible for Nemeth Code Certification issued by National Federation of the Blind (NFB) preferred.
  • Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required.
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.
