About This RoleJob Title: Director of Quality / End-to-End TestingLocation: New Jersey / Dallas / Chicago
Job Summary:As the Director of Quality and End-to-End Testing on our Ascend platform, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and scalability of our innovative new platform. This role demands strategic vision (informed by experience), leadership and influence prowess, and a hands-on approach to drive the implementation of best practices in quality assurance throughout the development lifecycle, with a particular focus on executing within an agile environment and ensuring regression predictability.
Duties/Responsibilities:Strategic Leadership:
  • Develop and execute the quality assurance strategy for automated end-to-end testing on the Ascend platform, with emphasis on functional completeness and exception testing across business workflows, and business SME transparency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align quality objectives with business goals, ensuring seamless integration of QA processes within an agile development environment.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the organization to enhance testing efficiency and effectiveness, leveraging agile methodologies.
  • Develop and sustain strong, collaborative working relationships with other departments across Apex to build trust and understanding.
Team Leadership:
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of product, engineering, and testing professionals, emphasizing the importance of testing and agile practices.
  • Foster a culture of quality, innovation, and accountability across technology and business partners, promoting agile principles such as iterative development and frequent feedback loops.
  • Establish clear goals and performance metrics to evaluate team performance, with a focus on automated end-to-end system test coverage and agility in responding to changing requirements.
  • Generate energy to motivate the team throughout the entire product cycle.
End-to-End Testing:
  • Closely collaborate with other Product Managers and Business SMEs during the definition of new features and other initiatives that require cross-domain testing and expand the automated testing suite to cover these new workflows.
  • Design and implement comprehensive end-to-end testing frameworks and methodologies, seamlessly integrating end to end testing across functional domains, operational services, and data delivery pipelines.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and analysis of end-to-end test scenarios, prioritizing testing efforts based on risk and impact analysis.
  • Ensure thorough test coverage across all components and integrations of the platform, with a focus on identifying and mitigating regression risks of the client-facing API and UI surface.
Quality Assurance Processes:
  • Define and enforce quality assurance processes and standards that are compatible with agile methodologies, promoting continuous integration and automated regression testing.
  • Set testing strategy and direction for domain teams, support their efforts to continuously improve domain level testing, and provide leadership around best practices and tooling to accelerate testing coverage.
  • Establish robust QA metrics and reporting mechanisms to track progress and identify areas for improvement, facilitating agile retrospectives and sprint reviews.
  • Conduct regular audits and reviews to ensure compliance with QA standards and regulatory requirements, adapting processes as needed to support agile development practices.
Automation and Tooling:
  • Drive automation initiatives to streamline testing processes and accelerate release cycles, with a specific focus on automating regression test suites within the promotion framework.
  • Evaluate and implement appropriate testing tools and technologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness, leveraging automation frameworks compatible with agile development practices.
  • Champion innovation in test automation practices to stay ahead of industry trends, continuously improving regression testing capabilities within an agile environment.
Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate closely with product management, development teams, and other stakeholders to prioritize testing activities and resolve issues within agile development sprints.
  • Communicate QA status, risks, and recommendations to senior management and project stakeholders, providing visibility into end to end testing efforts and agile progress.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and cross-functional collaboration to foster a culture of quality ownership within an agile development framework.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of software testing methodologies, tools, and best practices, with a deep understanding of agile principles and practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and lead teams in an agile environment.
  • Strong ability to listen, but also to question assumptions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to adapt storytelling to different audiences based on their priorities and level of knowledge.
  • Experience in building and managing high-performing QA teams within agile development frameworks.
  • Expertise in test automation frameworks and tools (e.g., Selenium, Appium, JUnit), with a focus on automating regression test suites within agile workflows.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, with a demonstrated ability to adapt QA processes to support agile practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, with a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating regression risks within an agile environment.
  • Certification in quality assurance (e.g., ISTQB) and agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban) is a plus.
  • Understanding of user experience, web development, API standards, and Agile practices, with a strong preference for best practices and incremental delivery.
  • Ability to make decisions with imperfect information, lead without authority and be comfortable managing a team through ambiguity and complexity.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Proven experience (5-8 years) in a leadership role in quality assurance, with a focus on end-to-end testing, regression testing, and executing within an agile environment. Financial Services and/or multidisciplinary, enterprise environment, SaaS / Cloud Architecture, API platform, Legacy app consolidation, a plus.
Work Environment:
  • We are a hybrid working environment, you are expected to work from your local office 3 days/week
  • Position requires 25% time for travel to other offices. (We’re a distributed company.)
