General Purpose
The payroll tax accountant is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting payroll processes and procedures to ensure compliance with company policies and government regulations. Responsibilities include overseeing and preparing all required federal, state, and local tax filings, researching and monitoring payroll compliance issues, and planning and implementing the tax updates to the payroll system and the maintenance of and upgrades to the payroll tax filing system.
Responsibilities of this position include the following:
Oversee the maintenance of payroll tax records, payment of payroll tax deposits and preparation of all required federal, state, and local tax filings and forms. Serve as company contact with payroll tax agencies to resolve discrepancies and issues. (50%)
Research and interpret payroll accounting and tax issues to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; advise payroll and human resources staff regarding payroll and tax requirements. Support the quarterly Sarbanes-Oxley review of the payroll controls and oversee the annual review of the payroll compliance plan. (30%)
Oversee and monitor the reconciliation of the payroll-related balance sheet accounts; develop the annual payroll taxes budget; serve as liaison to the treasury, accounting and corporate tax departments for matters related to payroll accounting and taxes. (10%)
Provide guidance related to payroll accounting and tax issues to the payroll analyst and payroll specialists. (5%)
Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (5%)
Requirements for this position include the following:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business or equivalent related work experience. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)
A minimum of six years related work experience with at least four years related to payroll tax accounting.
Certified public accountant designation is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of payroll tax regulations and procedures and experience with payroll tax filings. Strong knowledge of accounting principles.
Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills; ability to identify key causes and workable solutions.
Demonstrated proficiency in computer software skills to extract and analyze information. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently. Effective oral and written communication skills.
