Position Description Summary
APT Research is hiring a System Safety Engineer to support Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) on the KSC Safety and Mission Assurance Support Services (SMASS IV) contract. This role provides engineering assurance, operational safety oversight, hazard analysis, and review designs for residual risk for the SA-F division.

Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:
- Perform Safety Surveillance of EGS Ground Processing operations and EGS managed facilities
- Serve as a Safety engineer for processing operations, reviewing Work Authorizing Documents, and contractor electrical safety processes and procedures for compliance to NASA and industry standards
- Assist the SMA Element Integration Engineers with the resolution of identified Safety issues and provide Safety Engineering and Occupational safety technical guidance
- Lead mishap and close call investigations for events that occur within EGS facilities or by EGS contractors
- Assist the EGS Mishap Manager with processing and closure of NMIS entries
- Review Contractor-developed Mishap and Close Call Reports to ensure root cause analysis and associated corrective action plans are adequately addressed
- Develop and Lead informative presentations on high visibility safety topics that require SMA leadership and EGS Program Chief Safety Officer (CSO) review and concurrence & also may provide formal briefings to Program stakeholders
- Participate in SMA Technical Assessments relating to assigned subsystems or high-profile non-conformances
- Generate fault trees to identify failure modes and assist in troubleshooting
Required Experience/Education:
- Education: Bachelors of Science in an Engineering or Science field (aerospace, mechanical, industrial, etc.)
- Experience: 4 years of Engineering experience
- Direct safety engineering practices & KSC experience is highly preferred
- Exceptional verbal and written communications skills required for complex technical issues.
Security Clearance Requirement:
- Position subject to pre-employment background investigation
- Position subject to a pre-employment drug test
- No secret clearance, but must be able to qualify for an unescorted badge (US Citizen required
Preferred Experience:
- Experience preparing and presenting safety issues and technical assessments to NASA management
- System Safety background with experience in operations, safety surveillance, or integrating flight hardware.
- Experience performing SMA Hazard Analyses, creating Fault Trees, or assessing FMEAs
- Experience performing SMA mishap and close call investigations
- Experience leading independent technical assessments and providing briefings to senior level management
- Ability to read/interpret drawings, requirements, and specifications
- Experience building relationships inside and outside organizational boundaries
- Strong written and oral communication skills including data visualization, presentation, and explanation of results

Travel Requirements:
- Requires ability to travel domestically (within the U.S.) <10%
Physical Requirements:
- Requires sitting for periods of time at a workstation / desk
- Requires standing in field/ processing areas for periods of time
- Access flight hardware processing areas, climb stairs
- Ability to lift >15 lbs.
