High School English Teacher - Bishop Foley Catholic High School
Position Description: Bishop Foley Catholic High School in Madison Heights, Michigan has immediate need for an English teacher for the 2024-25 School Year. A 9-12 Co-Ed Catholic School located near 14 mile and Stephenson Hwy, we are a caring and supportive staff that work together to create an academically excellent, undeniably Catholic experience to each and every student entrusted to us. Our ideal teacher has strength in the areas of student engagement, research writing, and literary analysis. All BFC teachers bring faith into the classroom each and every day. The start date for this position is August 12, 2024, with additional meetings and support given for planning and development during the summer. Applying candidates must have a current BA endorsement or similar/equivalent Michigan certification.
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Current/Expected Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in English (BA or similar)
  • Experience planning and delivering lessons on grammar and writing
  • Knowledge of common (canon) English texts, plays, and poetry, and a willingness to stay ahead of students on reading, to approach each text as an expert.
  • Knowledge of the English Standards attached to coursework/levels by MDE, as well as of ACT & SAT tested standards.
  • Strong classroom management skills, with a desire to create an environment that fosters growth and opportunity for students
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn about instruction in: Publications, Journalism, Yearbook (support provided)
Candidates with experience in a Catholic/Private school, and/or in a High School setting, are highly sought and will be given priority. All candidates who have the proper certification and a desire to facilitate students’ development in critical thinking and academic writing are invited to apply.
Once a candidate is selected and an offer accepted, the English Department will assist in planning, preparation and standards for all courses. All courses in the English curriculum at BFC have a strong focus on writing at the college level, expressing ideas creatively, and evaluating texts and sources for reliable evidence.
All teachers in the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit shall be certified and /or approved for teaching by the Department of Education for the State of Michigan. All teachers are required to hold the appropriate endorsement for the subject(s) they are assigned to teach. Prior to beginning work, all AOD Staff must attend Protecting God's Children, and complete a background check/fingerprinting.
Salary to commensurate with experience based on Archdiocesan Teacher Salary Scale. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, with a family tuition discount phased in over three years.
