Job Purpose

The Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools reports to the Superintendent of Secondary Schools and Schools of Special Education and works in collaboration with the Superintendent in the management and operation of the secondary schools. The secondary schools are managed by the Office of Catholic Education in collaboration with the local presidents and principals.

Missionary Discipleship

  • Give witness to the Catholic faith and promote the essential characteristics and fundamental values of a Catholic school and work environment.
  • Articulate the mission and vision of the Office of Catholic Education in all facets of the work.
  • Participate in Archdiocesan Committees as assigned.
  • To lead with a missionary heart.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with principals and assistant principals through in-person regular meetings at the schools to ensure that schools achieve expected academic outcomes.
  • Provide in-person interaction with school administrators and school personnel to ensure objectives are met and issues are addressed timely.
  • Participate in formal school visitations as scheduled throughout the school year as well as informal school visits in follow-up on areas within the school that need to be addressed.
  • Conduct classroom visitations to assess educational and operational effectiveness and assist school administration to establish and maintain a positive learning and working environment.
  • Develop, conduct, and supervise training and professional development programs for secondary school administrators; and participates in various committees dealing with the operation of the secondary schools.
  • Develop, conduct, and supervise training and professional development programs for secondary school teachers.
  • Review and analyze standardized and benchmark testing data for use in school progress evaluation and diocesan wide strategic planning.
  • Monitor staffing and rostering decisions to ensure quality placement and adherence to the Labor Management Agreement.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the Association of Catholic Teachers, secondary religious personnel, lay personnel as well as all teachers and school administrators.
  • Ensure fair and consistent implementation of policies, regulations, procedures, discipline, and graduation requirements.
  • Assist with all grievance procedures in consultation with the Superintendent.
  • Assist with school incident report management as related to students, teachers, and administrators. Meet with parents, guardians and other stakeholders as needed to review or discuss incidents.
  • Support creative changes in all aspects of secondary curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development opportunities for secondary schools.
  • Supervise and support specific curriculum committees as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Coordinate the dissemination of information, policies, regulations, procedures, and reports to school administration as directed by Superintendent.
  • Maintain a positive, collaborative, and mutually supportive working relationship with community agencies, parents, students, and school staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Practicing Catholic as verified by the pastor of the parish in which the applicant is registered.
  • Masters or Advanced graduate degree required.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years in high school leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience in central office or district office preferred.
  • Excellent understanding of computer systems.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and demonstrate an ability to work in a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Provide leadership for staff and establish clear roles and responsibilities with measurable performance objectives (annual performance evaluations).
  • High-energy individual who is self-motivated, and a confident, capable presenter, both verbal and written.

Working Conditions

  • Twelve-month, full-time position; evenings and weekends as required.
  • A valid driver's license and willingness to travel.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • The majority of this job will be spent indoors in a climate-controlled environment.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear.
  • Must be able to carry and lift items weighing up to 15 pounds.

Pennsylvania state requires clearances and Archdiocese of Philadelphia Safe Environment certification and official transcripts will be required before employment can begin.
