Description
The general function of the department :
To service children with special needs during the regular ten month school year, and a special extended school year program during the summer.
The primary purpose of this position:
Provides direct/consultative occupational therapy services to students, including informal assessment/goal setting/treatment program planning/implementation/related documentation/communication to educational staff/related services/family. The School Occupational Therapist will participate in the development of individual student goals/plans/decisions in consultation with school administration and staff/the students physician/sending district child study team/family. The School Occupational Therapist provides appropriate and consistent services to the student, helping to implement educational activities. He/she will be a member or consultant of the Archway child study team.
Specific duties and responsibilities:
  • Responds to requests for services/initiates referrals when appropriate, contacts appropriate personnel
  • Screens students to determine need for intervention
  • Evaluates students to obtain/interpret data necessary for treatment planning/implementation
  • Interprets evaluation findings and outcomes of treatment intervention to teachers/CST personnel/family
  • Develops IEPs including goals, objectives, methods, strategies, materials and evaluations
  • Determines level of treatment according to students needs/abilities
  • Coordinates treatment plan with students/family/educational staff
  • Implements occupational therapy procedures within the educational setting as prescribed by the students IEP
  • Implements treatment plan directly with student and/or in consultation with educational staff/family
  • Monitors students response to intervention/modifies treatment as indicated to attain goals
  • Develops appropriate in-classroom/home programming to maintain/enhance students performance in their own environment, with follow through to ensure proper execution of program
  • Documents results of students evaluation/treatment/follow-up/termination of services
  • Develops/provides in-service education to staff/family
  • Participates in developing services/policies/procedures as a member of the Archway child study team, to determine most effective program implementation
  • Initiates/participates in peer review/self-evaluation
  • Attends yearly Primary Restraint Technique (PRT) training.
  • Obtains occupational therapy prescription (if necessary) from the students family physician
  • Responsible for any miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum educational requirements:
  • graduate degree
Minimum experience required:
  • 3 - 6 months
  • Experience with young handicapped children in an educational setting as a supervised OT student or graduate OT
Other knowledge, skills, and certifications required :
  • N.J. Certified School Occupational Therapist
  • Current AOTCB Certification
  • Malpractice/liability insurance, personally obtained if desired for staff members
  • Mandatory $1,000,000/$3,000,000 Malpractice/Liability Insurance for hourly contracted professional
