Adoption Specialist

Position Overview

At the Arizona Humane Society, our Adoption Specialists are experience makers! From creating online pet profiles to drum up interest in the pet to greeting our potential adopters and escorting them through our kennels to assisting in the matchmaking adoption process, they aim to provide a consistent, positive, and excellent experience every time! In this role, you will effectively assess the needs of potential adopters and match them with pets most suited for their lifestyle and preferences while educating them on their chosen pet(s) known history including all medical and behavioral insights we have acquired during their time in the shelter.

Ensuring the adopter is educated about the pet's needs, including the recommendation of supplies in our retail store to start them out on the right foot is also an essential part of this role.

Essential Functions

  • Provide exemplary service to all patrons in a courteous, compassionate, and professional manner.
  • Uncover the needs of potential adopters and match them with pets that meet their needs and lifestyle.
  • Effectively communicate medical and behavioral profiles of adoptable pets to adopters.
  • Facilitate meet and greet sessions with adoptable pets and adopters. This includes safely handling pets and facilitating dog to dog instructions.
  • Manage multiple adoptions simultaneously as assigned by leadership and as traffic dictates.
  • Sanitize all pet areas including meet and greet areas between appointments.
  • Facilitate the signing of agreements and ensure paperwork and data entry is completed accurately and legibly.
  • Ensure all animal information cards are updated daily.
  • Humanely care for the animals under our care .
  • Walk pets as needed; monitor health and report any illness to our medical team.
  • Recognize and report any signs of stress or behavior issues to the appropriate leader.
  • Continue to expand knowledge of breed and species types and their basic care and housing.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of both the on-site and off-site adoption areas.
  • Foster and maintain good working relationships with volunteers.
  • Solicit donations from all patrons.
  • Promote and recommend retail products to adopters to help increase retail sales and ensure targets are met.
  • Merchandise retail space, and maintain clean, well-organized, and full displays.
  • Perform all functions necessary for a successful retail operation, including, but not limited to : handling all monies, being knowledgeable about all products and promotions.

Ability to respond quickly to changes and adapt expansions as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization and our customers.

  • Perform cashier duties; close-out cash drawer, count money and balance reconciliation form.
  • Answer telephone and email inquiries from internal departments as well as the public within a timely manner.
  • Keep necessary forms and supplies adequately stocked and understand their intended uses and applications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Certifications / Licenses :

High school diploma / GED

Qualifications & Experience :

  • Six months to one-year prior work experience.
  • Experience in customer service or animal welfare environment preferred.
  • Requires strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Requires above-average clerical skills with the ability to complete paperwork accurately.
  • Must be able to learn and demonstrate how to handle animals safely and humanely in all conditions.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to work a flexible work schedule, including weekends and evenings.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :

Language Skills : Able to speak, read and write English; Spanish language helpful.

Mathematical Skills : Understanding of retail and cash handling operations required.

Computer Skills : Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary.

Proficiency with or ability to learn / use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment).

Other :

Regular attendance and punctuality are required.

Work Environment / Physical Demands :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
