Responsible for performing all phlebotomy procedures in a timely manner. Performs procedures according to physician’s orders in the patient’s chart or per prescription on outpatients. As a member of the care team, the phlebotomist is responsible for working collaboratively with other members to ensure the safe and accurate delivery of patient care. Assumes, under the direction of the Laboratory, responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement and equipment maintenance.

Primary Duties

Pre-Analytical:

1. Uses EHR to print patient requisitions.
2. Performs routine venipuncture or capillary puncture using proper procedure and technique. Refers to Specimen Collection and Handling Procedure.
3. Follows correct procedure for patient identification and labeling specimens. Refers to Patient Identification and Specimen Labeling Policy.
4. Correctly labels and centrifuges specimens.
5. Maintain an organized clean work enviroment

Analytical:

1. Performs CoaguCheck testing according to established procedure.
2. Accurately records INR results on the requisition.

Post-Analytical:

1. Uses the EHR to look up and print patient reports.
2. Sorts and charts patient reports.
3. Logs and files reference lab reports.
4. Perform Lab billing

General:

1. Complies with the following policies:

e. Fire and Electrical Safety

2. Maintains patient confidentiality.

3. Maintains and cleans phlebotomy area and ensures it is well-stocked.

• Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Licensure/Certification: MA certification preferred. BLS certification required within the first 30 days of employment. Basic EKG skills required within 6 months of employment. Certification is to be renewed by recommended renewal date on certification card.
• Experience: Min. 2 years phlebotomy experience required. Knowledge of EHR and ability to navigate EHR preferred.
