POSITION TITLE: Summer Camp Unit Director

SALARY RANGE: $1,240 Per Week - Seasonal/Full-Time/Exempt
Position Summary:
The Army and Navy Academy seek seasonal summer Unit Directors prepared to create and provide campers with a unique camp setting focused on success and individual achievement. The Unit Director reports directly to the Program Coordinator and is responsible for the daily administration of the summer camp activity program, including ensuring the well-being and safety of all participants, planning, preparing, and overseeing activities, providing daily feedback, and maintaining a fun and safe environment for the participants. The Unit Director also oversees the performance of Activity Counselors. Unit Directors supervise camper participation in activities, contribute to providing a safe and nurturing environment, demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers, and interact appropriately with campers and staff.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Attend staff orientation, training, and scheduled daily review meetings
Actively participate in all aspects of staff training and orientation
Demonstrate character qualities such as caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
Prepare campus facilities for camper arrival and departure
Assist with the planning, facilitation, and supervision of camper recreational activities
Oversee, and facilitate scheduled morning, afternoon, and evening activities
Responsible for the direct supervision of Activity Counselors, acting as a leader and mentor, providing them with instructions for daily activities
Lead campers through hands-on activities, presentations, and field trips
Ensure that campers are supervised and maintain a safe and enjoyable camp environment
Remain vigilant of campers, taking the initiative to engage and positively redirect misbehaving campers
Correct and document situations that endanger campers’ emotional or physical safety
Assist with camper arrival days and additional camp-related activities
Mediate conflicts between campers and report any crucial concerns to senior staff
Promptly notify an administrator or senior staff when there is reason to believe a camper is at risk or in danger due to such issues as program failure, bullying, sexual harassment/misconduct, depression, or suicide ideation
Follow and enforce personnel guidelines as outlined in summer Personnel Policies
Perform other duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications:
Current CPR & First Aid certification
Previous work with summer camps or interaction with large groups of children
Required Qualifications:
Minimum 18 years of age
Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
Ability to interact professionally with a diverse population of customers, campers, and staff
Professional demeanor, and excellent verbal and written communication skills
Consistent demonstration of dependability, responsibility, honesty, integrity, adaptability, and willingness to act as a role model to campers and staff
Ability to observe and evaluate participant activities, enforce safety regulations and mitigate risk by applying appropriate policies and procedures
Ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in emergencies
Successfully pass a background check and drug screening as a condition of employment
Special Considerations:
Summer Camp Counselors may reside in Academy housing for the contracted work period
