ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Capital Programs oversees all aspects of major and minor construction projects at the Museum.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Project Manager (PM) is responsible for the planning and execution of campus construction projects, including permanent gallery modifications and renovations. Working closely with the Director of Gallery Projects, the PM ensures implementation of a consistent approach to all projects in tandem with other departments. The PM coordinates all design and construction elements, from program development through final installation. The PM also supports campus space planning initiatives and the facilitation of museum-wise office moves and renovations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Management: Coordinates all production / construction aspects of multiple projects. Provides input to project team stakeholders regarding programming, planning, and design. When necessary, they facilitate architect/engineer/contractor selection, bidding, contract management, construction management, commissioning/closeout, project documentation, and facilitates communication to all museum stakeholders throughout.
Budget Management : Works with Museum Finance and Director of Gallery Projects to establish, monitor, and manage project budgets. Approves project expenses within established budgets. Reviews any budget revisions with project stakeholders, Museum Finance and Director of Gallery Projects prior to approval of expense.
Schedule Management: Coordinates with the Director of Gallery Projects and other departments to manage and schedule construction projects within an overall project calendar for the museum. Manages all aspects of project production schedules, once project content is approved. Coordinates with other project stakeholders during early phases of project content development and leads biweekly resource meetings to track ongoing and future projects.
Gallery Projects: Manages all design and construction related components within the scope of a permanent gallery project. Acts as an important liaison between curatorial teams and all resource departments in addition to external vendors or contractors. Creates preliminary budgets for all capital requests and permanent gallery modifications and renovations.
Building Asset Management : Supports the CP department in maintenance of base building plans in electronic and hard copy format, including square footage documentation. Helps to monitor the furniture and casework inventory and works with Central Administration's Procurement team for strategic pricing and purchasing of new furniture and equipment.
Best Practices: With input from Facilities & Logistics, design teams and the director of Gallery Projects, ensure that all projects adhere to City of Chicago Building Code and ADA requirements, as well as accessibility guidelines for both staff and visitors. Coordinate with Museum Facilities' Health and Safety team to perform all work according to applicable OSHA guidelines. Serves as liaison with external collaborators for sharing of Museum Procedures and best practices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer; must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
Frequently moves about through the museum galleries and offices; must be able to cross campus in a timely manner and be present for in-gallery activities where seating may not be available.
Constantly operates a computer; must be able to communicate effectively through digital tools.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Construction Management or Engineering equivalent preferred
  • Comprehensive understanding of project delivery gained through documented education and/or experience, including a detailed understanding of building systems, construction practices, contracting procedures, and building design methodologies
  • 3-5 years of experience in project design, construction management or equivalent required
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills appropriate to managing the flow of information in support of decision making at the highest management levels of a complex institutional organization
  • Strong supervision and management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple in-house and external professional, technical, and administrative support staff
  • Familiarity with construction process and codes in a variety of settings, and the ability to apply this knowledge to the development of innovative and accessible solutions to problems in the design and construction process
