ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Entertainment Design Part-Time Faculty, open rank— (non-tenure track) to join our team.
The salary range for this position: $5,990.00 - 12,583.00 per 3-Credit Course Section based on rank in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement placement.

Finalsalary is based on education, experience, skills relevant to therole, and internal equity.

This is a part-time teaching position requiring a background in professional design. The position will carry a workload including teaching and departmental duties for a 5-hour studio class. Additional duties as assigned. Faculty will be expected to maintain an active professional or research practice.

ArtCenter is seeking a talented and experienced Capstone Production 2 (Character Animation) Instructor to teach an undergraduate course focused on animated short film production within Entertainment Design and Animation. The instructor should have experience as a director, writer/director in the animation industry on either an animated feature film, TV series, or short film. This course aims to help students complete their animated short films. Students, assigned to teams, will continue working on productions that are 5th to 8th term Capstone projects. Production tasks may involve CG character animation, finalizing 2D and/or 3D animation, or other aspects of the animation production pipeline, as dictated by each film's creative brief. The goal is to finalize all animation production and produce a final film by the end of the term.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching Capstone Production 2 (Character Animation) in the Entertainment Design/Animation department at ArtCenter College of Design

Essential Functions

Part-time faculty members are expected to contribute to the further evolution and visibility of the program by activities such as:

  • Provide instruction and feedback during scheduled class hours or meetings
  • Provide asynchronous instruction and feedback, as applicable for the course
  • Maintain, track, and report student attendance through the Learning Management System (“LMS”), and report issues of student attendance to the Department Chair, Associate Chair, or Assistant Chair
  • Prepare instructional materials and class syllabi (aligned with current department curriculum Program Learning Outcomes and Course Learning Outcomes) in LMS and other College tools or templates;
  • Before week one of classes, distribute syllabi to students, and College administration pursuant to College guidelines
  • Post student grades in required tools by required deadlines
  • Communicate with students through the College’s official LMS, Zoom, at on campus meetings and ArtCenter sanctioned events, and/or ArtCenter email or other pre-approved methods and/or platforms of communication only
  • Facilitate course evaluations through the College’s evaluation protocol;
  • As required by the Department Chair, Associate Chair, or Assistant Chair, participate in communication of courses by providing relevant materials to and communicating with departments
  • As required, provide materials for assessment according to accreditation standards and department and College compliance.
  • Schedule a reasonable amount of time to hold student consultations outside of class to expand upon and/or clarify classroom instruction
  • Write student recommendations, if requested by the department or the student
  • Remain current on college procedures, tools, and learning modules
  • Complete required learning modules related to federal and state requirements and ArtCenter policies pertaining to health and safety rules, regulations and practices, as assigned by Employee Experience and Engagement Department
  • Attend required department and other administrative meetings
  • Attend required college-wide meetings
  • Participate in Faculty Performance Review/Evaluation process

Union Membership

As a condition of continued employment within 31 days following the execution of this Agreement or the first date for which they are on payroll, either become a member of the Union and pay regular monthly dues thereto, or in lieu thereof, shall pay an agency fee (a service charge as a contribution toward the cost of administration of this Agreement and representation by the Union) to the Union each month.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard classroom setting with frequent interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is regular exposure to fumes, chemicals, dust and noise.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a classroom setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 20 pounds); to operate modern office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading class materials, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in design, a related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent professional experience
  • 5 years of current industry experience working in the entertainment field, including gaming and/or film, with a strong portfolio showcasing concept designs
  • Ability to develop effective curriculum
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion and recognize the confidential nature of ArtCenter business, as well as requirements under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Must be able to work with and understand our culturally diverse student and faculty body with their needs and goals
  • A commitment to DEIAB and culture, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within ArtCenter’s diverse communities
