Artisan Insight is Hiring a Mixed Signal Design Engineer Near San Francisco, CA

ABOUT US

Artisan Insight is a new startup commercializing a deep tech innovation to fundamentally change the electronics industry. We are a team of experienced founders and engineers who have worked at companies like Uber, Verkada, Heptio, BloomEnergy, and Zeiss. We have shipped code that runs on Mars, scaled the largest web services, changed the way people get around cities, and built synchrotron x-ray sources. We are backed by exceptional investors who are committed to creating the next category defining company. We are hiring the first engineers who will define how we work and what we build. This is a chance to get on the ground floor and build the future with us. We are a small team with an ambitious vision and exciting technical challenges. Let’s take a swing together and write a new chapter in the textbooks.

WHAT WE VALUE:

Passion for your Craft: Show us your personal projects, your passions, your reason for being an engineer. We look for a maker’s attitude and willingness to take on any challenge.

Learner’s Mindset: We focus on learning and thrive in an environment with hard problems and frequent feedback. This role will stretch both the depth and breadth of your skills. You will work with incredible people on an incredible mission and learn by doing new things. As an early team member, you will have the freedom to set the culture and are expected to innovate.

High Standards & Continuous Self Improvement: We have high expectations colored by optimism. We prioritize learning, experiment often, and admit when we’re wrong. We’re doing something never tried before and value people who are comfortable with the unknown and want to figure things out together. We are seeking someone intellectually honest who will hold us accountable.

Strong fundamentals: There is no recipe for what we are building so a strong grasp of circuit and design fundamentals will be necessary for success. You understand the how and the why. You know when to follow design rules and when to break them.

THE ROLE:

You will take our designs from proof of concept to prototype and mass production. You will be responsible for schematic capture, board layout, analog circuit design, signal processing, and extensive testing and debugging. You will be a part of creating the technology and understanding the limits of what it can do. You have shipped electronic products through the NPI phases and are comfortable with the concepts of EVT, DVT, and PVT. If you understand analog circuits and have pulled your hair out trying to debug a crosstalk or desense issue, we want to talk to you. If you believe that hardware development should be as fast and easy as software development, and you are interested in solving a grand challenge, you may be a good fit. This is not a role for an architect or systems engineer who is uncomfortable with mixed-signal design. It is for someone who wants to work in person with great people, solving tough challenges, and creating the foundation for a new technology and culture. A list of other suggested qualifications is below.

REQUIREMENTS & ATTRIBUTES:

  • 5 years of experience
  • BS or MS in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or related field
  • Altium, KICAD, or Cadence experience
  • Schematic capture, component creation, multilayer layout (6 layers with controlled impedance)
  • Exceptional test and debug skills
  • Comfortable with equipment like oscilloscope, four quadrant power supply, source measurement unit, spectrum analyzer, logic analyzer, electronic loads etc
  • Knowledge of safe grounding, isolation, and debugging techniques
  • A willingness to combine mixed-signal design techniques to creatively solve problems.
  • Experience working with a firmware team and running or modifying scripts to accelerate bring-up.
  • A good understanding of circuit primitives especially transistors. You know about a body diode, understand leakage, and have intuition for discovering hidden errors in design and manufacturing.
  • Experience with microprocessors, switching power supplies, and communication buses is a must.
  • Experience with FPGA or custom ASICs is preferred.
  • Experience with tuning and measuring intentional radiators.

BONUS POINTS TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD:

  • 📶RF testing or modeling beyond 2GHz
  • ☑️Knowledge of and experience with the V-model
  • 📱COF, COG, or other design experience with high-resolution displays or touch panels
  • ⚡Tape out of a custom chip
  • 🧯Compliance or functional safety testing

If you don’t meet the exact requirements but have other reasons why you think you would be a good fit, we encourage you to apply and tell us about them. All applications will be reviewed and receive a response from a human.
