Astoria School District No. 1C is seeking applicants for the following - 8 hr Bus Driver/Assistant Mechanic position.

JOB TITLE: Bus Driver/Assistant Mechanic

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director

EVALUATED BY: Transportation Director

LOCATION: Transportation Department

JOB SUMMARY:

Assist in maintaining all district buses and other vehicles in good operating condition to assure the safe transport of both the students and employees of the district.

QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION:(Paid training provided for all necessary bus driver qualifications)

  • Must possess a current valid Oregon class "B" driver's license issued by the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles including air brake, passenger, and "S" endorsements (training provided)
  • Must possess Department of School Bus Driver's Certificate (training provided)
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, safety practices, and procedures governing school bus (training provided)
  • Operate school bus in accordance with applicable laws (training provided)
  • Practice and follow safety procedures
  • Manage student behavior; report student conduct problems to supervisor
  • Follow and implement assigned directions and responsibilities
  • Understand and follow all school district and department of education policies pertaining to transportation
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the operation of all types of shop tools and test equipment associated with maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline powered trucks and buses
  • Experience as a mechanic in the repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline engines, air brakes, automatic transmissions, power trains, electrical systems and components, and major component overhaul and rebuild
  • Demonstrate ability to analyze, diagnose and correct vehicle faults
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions
  • Skill in written and oral communication
  • Ability to use good judgment and follow proper procedures and directives and to work in a safe manner at all times
  • Ability to get along with other individuals
  • Maintain an up to date First Aid card and appropriate classroom hours

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in maintaining the district's transportation fleet in compliance with school district and state/federal standards and requirements.
  • Assistants in planning and performing the inspections, diagnoses and repairs of gas and diesel engines and such mechanical equipment as passenger vehicles, buses, trucks, and accessories, and all other equipment used in the district.
  • Communicates with Head Mechanic supplies, repair parts and replacement parts needs.
  • Assists in maintaining an accurate report of all on-the-road mechanical breakdowns.
  • Maintains an orderly arrangement of the work area at the bus garage.
  • Operates school buses and other vehicles as required to ensure proper repairs and maintenance.
  • Maintains a regular system for communication with the Head Mechanic regarding mechanical problems or needs.
  • Assists Administration in creating a positive image with school employees.
  • Drives a school bus daily over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students.
  • May drive handicap accessible buses on a designated route/trip or to be assigned as a substitute, driving a variety of routes.
  • Transports students, teachers, and chaperones on field trips to various locations making departure and arrival time as scheduled.
  • Performs an Oregon school bus pre-trip and post-trip inspection daily.
  • Cleans windshields and headlights. Cleans interior and exterior of bus as needed including, but not limited to, picking up debris, sweeping, and wiping and cleaning upholstery.
  • Maintains appropriate behavior among students on buses. Follows district policies regarding the student control.
  • Reports problems or equipment malfunctions to the mechanic.
  • Performs emergency evacuation drills as directed.
  • Performs first aid or emergency assistance as directed.
  • Attends scheduled meetings and safety programs.
  • Obeys all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Complete and submit accurate records required by the Transportation Department.
  • Reports all accidents, vehicle damage and student injuries as they occur to supervisor
  • Demonstrate ability to plan, organize, and effectively communicate
  • Demonstrate positive attitude toward fellow employees and supervisor
  • Maintain and updates route book as needed.
  • Keeps to assigned schedule.
  • Ability to drive all kind of buses
  • Discharges students only at authorized stops.
  • Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
  • Assists Administration in creating a positive image with school employees.
  • Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures
  • Regular and acceptable attendance is required
  • Other related duties as assigned
  • Perform physical requirements which may include:
      • Moderate degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs Frequent and prolonged standing, sitting, walking, bending, and arm lifting
      • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions of heat and cold
      • May require exposure to chemicals like oil and gas
      • Possible exposure to bodily fluids in cleaning due to student illness or injury

SALARY RANGE: 

2023-24 -Asst. Mechanic $22.97/hr, Bus Driver $22.05/hr

2024-25 -Asst. Mechanic $23.89/hr, Bus Driver $22.93/hr
