Astrobotic is Hiring a Metrology Engineer Near Pittsburgh, PA

Astrobotic is at the forefront of advancing space exploration and technology development. Our expertise spans from lunar rovers, landers, and infrastructure to spacecraft navigation, machine vision, and computing systems for in-space robotic applications. To date, the company has been contracted for two lunar missions, and has won more than 60 NASA, DoD, and commercial technology contracts worth more than $600 million.
We recently launched and operated the first American lunar lander mission since the Apollo Program. Beyond helping lead America back to the Moon, Astrobotic developed and operates reusable vertical takeoff, vertical landing (VTVL) rockets and continues to advance next-generation VTVL capabilities and advanced rocket engines. Established in 2007, Astrobotic is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, with a propulsion and test campus in Mojave, CA.
Astrobotic is seeking a highly skilled Metrology Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of experience to join our dynamic engineering team. As a Metrology Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the precision and accuracy of our manufacturing processes, measurement systems, and quality control procedures. You will design, develop, measure, and analyze systems for calibration and precision measurement for Astrobotic’s lunar lander product lines. This position will require personnel to independently perform non-routine and complex work assignments and will be considered an emerging authority on all disciplines of Metrology. The ideal candidate should possess a deep understanding of metrology principles, advanced measurement techniques, and proficiency in utilizing state-of-the-art metrology equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development, implementation, and optimization of metrology and calibration processes to guarantee the highest level of accuracy and precision in manufacturing operations.
  • Develop and implement metrology strategies to optimize efficiency and accuracy.
  • Conduct thorough analyses to identify and resolve measurement discrepancies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with industry standards. Authority over GD&T implementation during design and development.
  • Perform measurements on components, subassemblies, and spacecraft configurations to comply with requirements and ensure mission success. Perform reverse engineering as necessary in order to plan and document measurement requirements and procedures.
  • Work with laser trackers, laser scanners and other state-of-the-art measurement equipment within facilities, customer locations and supplier sites.
  • Design, select, and integrate appropriate measurement equipment, instruments, and software solutions to meet quality and measurement requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including design, production, and quality assurance to define metrology needs and provide guidance on measurement techniques.
  • Create and maintain measurement documentation such as procedures, standards, and guidelines to ensure consistent and reliable measurement practices throughout the organization.
  • Analyze measurement data, identify trends, and work with relevant teams to implement corrective actions and process improvements.
  • Participate in the identification and resolution of measurement-related issues, addressing root causes to minimize variations and defects in production.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in metrology technologies, techniques, and industry standards to ensure the organization's competitiveness and adherence to best practices.
Required Qualifications & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Physics, etc.) or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in metrology, measurement systems analysis, GD&T, and quality control within a manufacturing environment.
  • Expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), including practical application and interpretation in manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in using metrology equipment such as laser scanners, optical comparators, and related software.
  • SA (Spatial Analyzer) software knowledge and experience
  • Experience with statistical analysis tools and techniques to interpret measurement data and drive process improvements.
  • Ability to calculate overall measurement uncertainties, including identifying all contributing factors and the magnitude of impact each have on the measurement process
  • Solid knowledge of standards related to metrology and quality management systems.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex measurement issues.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and convey measurement insights to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proficient in CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and lifecycle management tools
Preferred Qualifications & Qualifications:
  • Experience with Polyworks Inspector
  • Experience with FARO measurement devices
  • Experience with developing metrology solutions for aircraft, spacecraft or launch vehicles
  • Experience with full life cycle from design to measurement to analysis of mechanical interfaces/components.
  • Experience with programming metrology equipment and automation using languages such as CMM programming languages (e.g., PC-DMIS), Python, or MATLAB.
  • Previous exposure to industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical devices, or precision manufacturing.
