- Manage the Nursing Department with the goal of achieving and maintaining the highest quality of care possible.
- Perform general management functions such as hiring, disciplining, and evaluating employees.
- Interview and hire new nursing staff.
- Round on unit at least once daily.
- Plan and facilitate meetings and committees to address resident care issues.
- Review time sheets for accuracy before payroll.
- Develop and manage systems to assure clinical competencies.
- Participate in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs that promote the recruitment, retention, development, and continuing education of nursing staff members.
- Identify training needs.
- Initiate studies to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing services in relation to their objectives and costs.
- Develop and manage the nurse-on-call system.
- Develop the department budget for approval, monitor expenses, and stay within budget.
- Investigate and resolve resident, family, and employee concerns.
- Ensure that annual competency evaluations and performance reviews are completed in the appropriate timeframe.
- Participate in the Employee Recognition Program.
- Proactively address survey and standards of care issues.
- Develop and manage the staffing scheduler system.
- Plan and guide the professional development of nursing staff.
- Ensure that adequate nursing staff is available based on facility/census requirements.
- Collect data to compile reports in a timely manner and meet deadlines.
- Participate in the facility's "Performance Improvement Program."
- Assure that all clinical protocols and nursing policies and procedures are followed.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
- Assure pharmacy, dietary, and physician consults are followed in a timely manner.
- Assume complete responsibility for the Center in the absence of the Administrator.
- Skilled in directing and motivating the workforce.
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents, their family members, and all levels of the organization.
- Ability to react decisively and quickly in emergency situations.
- Ability to organize and prioritize.
- Knowledge of training techniques for clinical staff.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act, state and federal regulations, policies, and procedures regarding nursing standards and delivery of care.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred.
- Valid RN license in the state employed.
- Valid CPR certification.
- Three years of experience as a Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, or equivalent supervisory nursing experience.
- Prolonged periods of sitting and standing as required for patient care.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times.
- Standard hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with potential for occasional evening or weekend hours.
