POSITION SUMMARY:

We are currently recruiting a Medical Records Specialist. The Medical Records Specialist is responsible for assisting with the transition from a paper health record to a corrections specific electronic health record (EHR). Having the information abstracted in a timely manner prior to the Go-Live for a new EHR system is vital to VADOC since it will allow to preserve quality of care, mitigate risks to patient safety, support use of clinical judgement, promote data-driven clinical decision-making, and facilitate clinicians’ use of the new EHR. This position starts at per hour and is located in VA.

· Responds to instructions and feedback of supervisors in a constructive manner in order to improve personal performance.

· Knowledge of the existing and emerging principles and concepts of health records

· Using standard documentation procedures to collect and communicate appropriate health information within legal and regulatory requirements

· Applying confidentiality and security measures to store and protect health information

· Understanding the practices, procedures, and personnel used to deliver quality patient care

· Engages in constructive dialogue with supervisors.

· Relates instructions and feedback of supervisors to personal knowledge, skills, and abilities.

· Acknowledges and follows through on coaching and/or instruction related to performance correction, enhancement, and/or development.

· Completes additional assignments and duties as assigned to ensure smooth operation of the work unit and agency.

  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems
  • Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned.
  • Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed.
  • Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must have experience in health information management and clinical professionals over a period of XX months to manually abstract the information from paper-based health records and transfer into the format used by the new EHR.lent verbal, written, and listening communication skills within the English language.
  • Knowledge of clinical documentation layout, format/ content for all visit types.
  • Working experience in clinical document management (i.e., sorting, indexing, filing, and retrieving health records) and multi-disciplinary office procedures (e.g., corrections, community and/or mental health, and dental office setting).
  • Proven, high quality customer service (internal and external customers).
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Solid ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt appropriate courses of action.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to effectively communicate to large and small group audiences.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Prefer graduation from CAHIM (Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education) - accredited educational program

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
  • Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
