Athens-Clarke County Unified Government is Hiring a Facility Maintenance Technician Near Athens, GA

Purpose & Job Related Requirements

***IN-HOUSE ONLY***
REPORTS TO: Operations Coordinator
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
CLASSIFICATION: Personnel System - Requires satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period
PAY GRADE: 114
SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes; Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.
Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to provide labor services and support in Unified Government buildings under the jurisdiction of the Central Services Department. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, repairing and maintaining plumbing, electrical and security systems; performing painting and carpentry tasks; performing grounds keeping tasks; supervising inmate helpers; and performing additional tasks as assigned.
Job Related Requirements
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
May be required to work on religious holidays.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
Emergency Position
This position is designated as an emergency position that requires your attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions. Some examples of emergencies include inclement weather, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations or as determined by the Manager.

Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Vocational or technical diploma or equivalent in a related discipline with one year of experience in electrical systems, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, flooring, construction, general/mechanical repair and maintenance work or related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must obtain security training for the supervision of inmate workers as set forth by the Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures within six months of date of hire or first available opportunity.
May be required to successfully complete the training requirement (2 week Basic Jail Course) set forth in O.C.G.A. Title 35, Chapter 8 Section 24 by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council within six months of date of hire.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Performs various skilled functions and general building maintenance tasks (e.g., plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning maintenance/repair, carpentry, masonry and block work, flooring installation and maintenance, painting, general cleaning, etc.).
Prioritizes work orders and establishes preventive maintenance schedule.
Performs various grounds keeping tasks.
Operates various machinery, equipment and tools associated with carpentry, plumbing, electrical, grounds maintenance, construction, and general maintenance projects; performs general and preventive maintenance as needed.
Installs, repairs, and replaces security fixtures/hardware, light fixtures, door locking devices, gates and closing devices, laundry and kitchen equipment, and lawn maintenance equipment, etc.
Maintains fire alarm systems; maintains jail furnishings and inmate recreational equipment.
Tests machinery, equipment, systems, etc., for proper operations; ensures that the electromechanical doors are working properly throughout the facility.
Maintains inventory of departmental supplies; initiates orders for new or replacement materials.
Performs various rough and finish carpentry tasks such as building cabinets and shelves, clearing out offices and buildings, hanging doors, and repairing furniture.
Responds to calls for emergency service on a twenty-four hour basis.
Prepares and/or receives various forms, reports, and other documents; processes and forwards as appropriate.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
Responds to routine requests for information from officials, employees, members of the staff, and the public.
Provides direction and guidance to assigned inmate workers; assigns work and directs work activities.
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Facility Maintenance Technician.
Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, of repair and maintenance techniques for building systems and equipment, and of other procedures and methods as required in the performance of duties.
Knowledge of construction, mechanics, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry and other trades as they relate to the position.
Knowledge and ability to operate various machinery, equipment and tools associated with carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, grounds maintenance, construction, and general maintenance projects.
Knowledge to read blueprints and electrical schematics.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff members.
Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.
Ability to plan, organize, and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.
Ability to perform a variety of repair and maintenance tasks, and to perform manual labor as it relates to the repair and maintenance of buildings, electrical circuits, plumbing, and related systems.

(ADA) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment associated with carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, grounds maintenance, construction, and general maintenance projects. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. Must be able to exert over one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to hear, speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving/receiving assignments and/or directions to/from co-workers, assistants or supervisors.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of blueprints, construction drawings, informational documentation, directions, instructions, methods and procedures. Requires the ability to prepare forms, reports, drawings, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand complex principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independent judgment in the absence of management.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative, technical or professional languages, including electrical systems and mechanical terminology.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with a variety of machinery and equipment associated with carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, grounds maintenance, construction, and general maintenance projects.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands, fingers, and eyes accurately in using equipment. Requires the ability to lift, bend, push, pull, manipulate equipment/tools and objects as the position necessitates.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as automated equipment, mechanic tools, hand tools, testing equipment, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
