Unistrut Construction, a part of Atkore, is a Chicago based Specialty Steel Subcontractor with approximately 200 employees and branches in major cities across the USA specializing in Healthcare, High-tech/Datacom, and Complex Commercial Construction work licensed nationwide with expertise in Design, Fabrication, and Installation services.
Who we are looking for:
We are currently looking for a Drafting Manager to be based out of Addison, IL. Reporting to the Director of Project Management, this person will be responsible for this position will champion our Lean activities in the department, supporting our objectives to improve overall engineering/drafting capacity and effectiveness and our longer-term strategic objectives of growth and operational improvement.
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or other related functional areas. Experience in lean manufacturing or business system-based company is a plus.
What you'll do:
  • Establish design/drafting workflow processes allowing for the development of market experts by project type and size utilizing the current embedded talent across the business. Direct workload to those best suited experts in the business. Establish, measure and track performance goals adjusting as required.
  • Utilizing ABS tools, this position will be directly involved in all continuous improvement activity at UCon, develop and implement standard work in the engineering/drafting process with the regional teams across NA and participate and lead Kaizen activity.
  • Responsible for defining BIM strategy/approach, choosing right tools, implementing systems for communication and data exchange.
  • Responsible for leading, managing and providing guidance and oversight to the department, while applying continuous improvement methodologies
  • Manage scheduling, day-to-day decisions and prioritization of projects to ensure timely completion; monitor quantity, quality and timeliness of work performed; provide instruction and direction to staff in the performance of their work.
  • Performance and Objectives reviews of direct reports
  • Technical support and develop solutions for all design application problems.
  • Evaluate and recommend purchases of new equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Implement and manage projects, support, teaching/training, quality control, IT related tasks i.e., software/hardware rollout, managing and purchasing of software and hardware.
  • Conduct/Coordinate site walks to determine scope and accuracy of drawings if necessary.
What you'll bring:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or other related functional areas
  • A minimum 3-5 years of experience in construction management or related fields, including drafting, estimating, scheduling, and project controls.
  • 2 Years demonstrated experience managing/leading teams (remote teams a plus)
  • Approximately 5% Travel
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Navisworks, Revit and Microsoft Office suite
  • Understanding of BIM and Coordination processes
  • Strong demonstrated verbal and written communications skills
  • Strategic decision-making skills to ensure strong customer service focus and technical sales support to meet business group and corporate revenue targets.
Within 3 months, you'll:
  • Complete your Atkore immersion program.
  • Understand how your job will deliver Atkore's strategy
  • Assist in overseeing file searches, updating, storage and retrieval of drawings and documents.
  • As a member of the UCon SLT participate in general management meetings of the segment
Within 6 months, you'll:
  • Coordinate handover of projects from small to large scale projects
  • Collect and analyze performance data developing a process to continuously improve the drafting department efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Prepare a variety of reports and records regarding work performed status of work in progress and activities of the department.
  • Track Key Performance Indicators - i.e., quality and delivery while identifying root causes.
Within 12 months, you'll:
  • Manage pricing of BIM services - Provide estimates of project drafting and modeling costs for other departments and advise others on services of the drafting department.
  • Drive improvements in gross margin attained on construction projects using lean tools and continuous improvement, i.e., BIM, Pre-Fabrication and Modularization initiative.
  • Analyze current design/drafting practices across all markets and establish best practices. Implement and track improvement.
  • Working with the other members of the Pre-Construction, Project Management, and Sales groups, integrate a design-to-build culture in design/drafting to support field productivity improvement objectives.
