DescriptionThe Atlantic Council Global Energy Center’s
Now entering its fifth cohort, the Fellowship develops leaders to become peer mentors, advocates, and spokespeople for other veterans, reservists, and military spouses, and solidifies the advanced energy connection to national security and the mission-driven progress of veterans’ employment in advanced energy industry, policy, or advocacy. Advanced energy is defined by leading-edge energy technologies including solar, wind, batteries, geothermal, microgrids, advanced nuclear, electric vehicles, end-user energy efficiency, among other innovations.
Participation in the program includes the following professional development opportunities:
  • Policy training in energy diplomacy, markets, technology, and experience-based skills training such as public speaking, op-ed writing, and entrepreneurship.
  • Mentorship from senior national security and energy leaders in the Atlantic Council’s network.
  • Participation in high-profile engagement settings, including Atlantic Council events, publications, and placement of written work.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge, fast-growing companies seeking candidates that couple leadership and management skills with technical acumen.
Expectations For The ProgramFellows are expected to engage in the following activities:
  • Attend an orientation webinar in September 2024.
  • Participate in monthly webinars on the third Tuesday of each month from October 2024 through September 2024.
  • Participate in two study tours to Washington, DC, the first from October 1-3, 2024, and the second tentatively scheduled for the first week of October 2025 (airfare and lodging provided).
  • Prepare an essay with 2-4 other Fellows, examining a global/national security or defense challenge and the role energy can play in creating long-term solutions.
Selection criteria
  • Veteran, reservist, or military spouse: Candidates must be a veteran of the US Armed Forces, currently serving in the reserves, or a veteran/military spouse.
  • Demonstrated interest in energy and national security: Candidates should have a strong demonstrated professional or personal interest in the advanced energy industry, technology, or policy and national security.
  • Passionate and driven: Candidates are highly accomplished in their careers and expected to rise to the top of their fields in the next 10 years.
  • Unique experiences and perspectives: The Veterans Advanced Energy Fellowship aims to select a cohort that is diverse in personal and professional backgrounds, as well as in the ideological and intellectual perspectives that they bring to the program.
  • Engaged in the community: Candidates are active in their communities and committed to working on solutions that will positively impact their communities. Fellows are expected to continue their engagement with the Veterans Advanced Energy Fellowship network after the completion of the fellowship.
  • Prepared to Participate: Candidates are expected to attend an orientation webinar in September 2024, monthly webinars on the third Tuesday of every month from October 2024 through September 2025, and two study tours to Washington, DC, the first from September 30-October 2, 2024, and the second tentatively scheduled for the first week of October 2025 (airfare and lodging provided). Candidates are also expected to prepare an essay with 2-4 other Fellows, examining a global/national security or defense challenge and the role energy can play in creating long-term solutions for this challenge while fostering preparedness and resilience in energy and security planning.
