Role Description

We are seeking a dynamic individual to join our Executive Leadership team as the Vice President, Technical Operations. This role reports directly to the CEO and is a strategic leadership role with primary responsibility for new product introduction, life cycle management of commercial products, and technical support for contract manufacturing sites. This position will lead a team of scientists located in San Diego who support aTyr research and manufacturing activities. In addition, this position is responsible for oversight of US and European CDMOs and has budgetary accountability for internal and external technical activities.

The company will consider remote-based candidates who can travel to contract manufacturing sites and our San Diego headquarters as required to successfully execute to the responsibilities of the position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement CMC strategies for the life cycle management of commercial products, including process improvement, cost optimization, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensures that technical issues in manufacturing are resolved in a timely manner to enable reliable and consistent drug supply.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and management of manufacturing operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices to ensure expectations are met.
  • Manages flawless launches with robust manufacturing processes by partnering with R&D during product development cycles.
  • As a member of a Joint Steering Committee, partners with manufacturing site representatives to implement good practices and drives product specific improvement to improve Cost of Goods and robustness of our products.
  • Helps to align Development, Quality, Regulatory and Operations technical decisions necessary for the commercial viability of manufacturing processes.
  • Provides scientific leadership and group management to his/her direct organization, setting high standards, building, and managing a high performing technical group.
  • Instills a strong customer service and high-performance culture with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize processes and ensure timely delivery of products to customers.
  • Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and key performance indicators for the Technical Operations team.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, product quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with external partners, suppliers, and regulatory agencies.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Life Sciences, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, with a focus on drug manufacturing and process development.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading teams through commercialization and product launch preferred.
  • Results oriented with emphasis on strong planning and execution skills.
  • Significant experience in global strategy development and implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully impact stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and persuade tactfully to obtain desired outcomes while maintaining effective, positive organizational relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry best practices related to manufacturing.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to think strategically and drive operational excellence in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated success in managing budgets, forecasts, and key performance indicators.

The salary range for this position is $260,000-$350,000 per year. This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on the Company’s compensation practices. In addition to a competitive compensation package with stock options and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan, aTyr Pharma also offers a comprehensive benefits package for our employees and their families, which includes medical, dental, life, disability, and a 401(k)-matching contribution.
