We are seeking a Director of Public Services for the AVHS Shelter which provides progressive care shelter services to companion animals. The Shelter cares for nearly 3000 animals per year and their care and comfort is our main priority.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Staff Development
    • Lead, train, coach, schedule, and problem-solve for staff and volunteers, encouraging a collaborative and kind working environment.
    • Prepare, review, verify and maintain proper records of work performance and timekeeping of staff and clinic operations.
  • Shelter Operations
    • Lead reception team in appointment management, outreach programs, client services, customer service, adoptions and licensing.
    • Support and promote Fear Free and similar animal handling practices within the clinic.
  • Program Management
    • Development and implementation of an annual business plan, strategic plan, and budget to include, but not limited to, strategies to increase productivity and efficiency within the clinic and promote AVHS workplace culture.
    • Prepare monthly and annual departmental reports as they relate to program metrics.
    • Evaluate the risks associated with each program and take appropriate action to mitigate the risks associated with the program.
    • Create program materials (policies and procedures, applications, handbooks, trainings, etc.).
    • Regularly audit and evaluate programs to ensure programs are targeted appropriately.
What you’ll need to be successful (minimum requirements):
  • 3 years experience in animal welfare or veterinary reception.
  • Experience developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to handle and assess potentially dangerous or fractious dogs and cats.
  • High proficiency in learning new software systems.
  • Experience in animal licensing.
  • Leadership:
    • Demonstrated experience in leading a diverse staff in a positive, friendly, collaborative, and inclusive manner.
    • Ability to engage with animals and humans who may be having a hard day with a commitment to quality care.
    • Strong communication skills to demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, tact, compassion, and sound judgment to your coworkers and community members.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
    • Experience developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Available outside of regularly scheduled hours in a leadership role promoting support staff and operational success.
    • Able to work flexible hours, which will include weekends.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft and clinic software programs; able to use effectively and guide others when needed.
    • Frequent ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; hear sufficiently; reach, bend, or stoop, regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation; ability to meet AVHS insurance requirements and appropriately operate AVHS vehicles in accordance with policy.
What we’d love if you had (preferred requirements):
  • Supervisory experience; especially in an animal welfare environment.
  • Experience with Petpoint software or other shelter software.
  • Program development experience.

  • This position will come in direct contact with hostile individuals, waste and other undesirable sounds and smells. This position will come in direct contact with animals and will be exposed to animal related smells and sounds.
