Position Overview:

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic Director, Field Based Medicine (FBM) to join our innovative and rapidly growing small biotech company. As an integral member of our medical affairs team, the FBM will play a crucial role in establishing and maintaining scientific relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), healthcare professionals, and other external stakeholders. The FBM will contribute to the success of our company's programs by providing accurate and up-to-date medical and scientific information, fostering collaborative partnerships, and facilitating meaningful scientific exchanges. This position will report to the head of medical affairs.


Key Responsibilities:

  • KOL Engagement: Develop and maintain strong relationships with thought leaders, physicians, and healthcare professionals within relevant therapeutic areas. Initiate and foster scientific dialogues to share clinical data, publications, and educational resources.
  • Scientific Communication: Serve as a subject matter expert in rare respiratory diseases and therapeutic approaches. Effectively communicate complex scientific information to KOLs, healthcare professionals, and internal stakeholders, ensuring accurate and appropriate interpretation.
  • Clinical Support: Provide scientific and clinical support to healthcare professionals, including addressing medical inquiries, facilitating discussions about treatment options, and supporting Avalyn’s clinical studies.
  • Medical Education: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and deliver scientifically accurate educational materials, presentations, and training programs for internal team members and external partners.
  • Strategic Insights: Gather insights from KOL interactions and stay current with scientific literature and clinical developments. Contribute to the development of the annual global medical affairs plan, medical strategies, and initiatives aligned with business goals.
  • Conference Participation: Attend relevant medical conferences, symposia, and scientific meetings to stay informed about the latest research, network with experts, and represent the company's scientific interests.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with internal team members, including clinical development, regulatory affairs, product development, and corporate development, to ensure alignment of medical and scientific activities with overall company objectives.
  • Compliance and Ethics: Adhere to all relevant industry guidelines, regulations, and ethical standards while conducting interactions with healthcare professionals and KOLs.


Key requirements for this role are:

  • Advanced degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, or equivalent) in a scientific discipline
  • Previous experience as an MSL or in a relevant scientific role within the biotech, pharmaceutical, or medical device industry
  • Experience in IPF/ILD or other rare respiratory diseases highly preferred
  • Strong understanding of the drug development process, clinical trial design, and regulatory requirements
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to distill complex scientific information for various audiences
  • Proven ability to build and maintain professional relationships with KOLs and other healthcare professionals
  • Self-motivated, independent, and able to work effectively in a small team and fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Willingness to travel as required to attend meetings, conferences, and KOL engagements
