Job Title:

Medical Assistant

General Job Summary: Responsible for providing patient education, coordination, and scheduling. Assists physician and staff in coordinating patient care. Functions as primary liaison between patients, staff and physician.

Reports To: Physician

Supervises: N/A

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assesses patient's general condition and takes vital signs and weight when necessary.
  • Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares list of medical supplies needed. Prepares equipment and aids provider (MD/NP/PA) during treatment, examination and testing of patients.
  • Educates patient/family about diagnostic procedures, and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Schedules patient appointments and procedures according to established protocol.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information.
  • Maintains/reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information.
  • Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls. Instructs patient and family regarding pre-operative and post-operative care.
  • Processes prescription refill requests.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Perform other related duties as directed or required.

Education: High school diploma.

Experience: Minimum of two years’ experience in a medical office (preferred).

Licensure Requirements: None.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of clinic policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical chart reporting/records.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance practices.
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation to communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of computer programs and applications.

Skills:

  • Skill in appropriate assessment and assistance techniques.
  • Skill in using office equipment and handling paperwork/filing adequately.
  • Skill in handling incoming phone calls and triaging appropriately.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication.

Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively as a team member with physicians and other staff.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to appropriately interact with patients, families, staff and others.
  • Ability to flexibly respond to changing demands.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.

Equipment Operated: Office machinery including computers, fax, dictating machine, calculator, and photocopier. Occasionally lift and carry files up to 20 pounds.

Physical/Mental Demands: Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Must be able to use a variety of office equipment. Occasionally lifting and carrying files up to 50 pounds. May require working under stressful conditions.

Work Environment: Normal office and exam room environment. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Under current laws, individuals and the Company are subject to specified sanctions, varied penalties and certain levels of fines for non-compliance, each dependent upon the investigated circumstances.
