Chemist III, Architectural Coatings – Charlotte, NC

Where the Chemistry Happens

We are seeking a Chemist III to work in the Dispersions & Pigments (ED) business unit as part of our Charlotte, NC company site.

The Technical Application Chemist III will leverage their background in architectural coatings formulation to complete hands-on application work on technical service projects for existing products and new products entering the commercialization phase to support growth with our customers. In addition, this position will coordinate lab work with Application Laboratory Technicians, may take general direction/collaboration with Technical Specialists, and is responsible for equipment, SOP/JSA, and writing reports. This position is part of the Architectural Coatings Application Laboratory team reporting to the Technical Team Leader.

Formula for Success

  • Conducts technical comparison of BASF vs. competitive products in Architectural Coatings (proactive to determine value proposition and reactive in case of customer request) and provides others with respective results/analyses/path forward.
  • Completes technical application tests of products for troubleshooting to derive product recommendations and/or formulation recommendations by using multiple product lines of the portfolio and for support of growth opportunities and recommendation of next steps.
  • Complaint management (production &/or customer): Performs technical testing and assessment of individual products via application testing and other analysis, providing others with respective results/analyses and recommendation of next steps.
  • Collaborates with R&D on application testing, results analysis, formulation support and recommendation of next steps especially for products entering commercialization phase.
  • Actively participate in all BASF safety practices and programs
  • Write/revise ISO 9001 documents to maintain and improve work instructions/SOPs
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or material science (or similar field). Advanced degree is a plus.
  • Minimum 7 years’ related experience, or equivalent combination of education and industrial experience.
  • Must have experience formulating Architectural Coating paints across multiple performance tiers.
  • Strong laboratory skills and ability to work on multiple tasks and projects as well as directing others
  • Ability to design and direct laboratory experiments, interpretation of results and designing of follow-up experiments
  • Maintenance of laboratory and laboratory equipment in compliance with ISO, knowledge of test methods and writing respective SOP/JSA
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, reporting of results in presentation as well as documentation
  • Work effectively under minimum supervision and in a team environment
