Title: Web Developer

Position Purpose:

The Web Developer uses their broad knowledge of Web technologies, design, presentation techniques, and Web languages to collaborate with content providers, graphic designers, interface designers, information architects, project managers and programmer/analysts in the creation and maintenance of high-quality Web services and applications that support the needs of the College. The position works with staff and faculty throughout the College to design, develop, enable and enhance Web-based solutions. The Web Developer assists in planning and developing strategies for delivering Internet technologies and will be involved on both small and large-scale projects as well as participate in team decision-making processes.

The Web Developer brings expertise on user experience and interaction design to teams charged with creating compelling, successful digital experiences for the college’s users. This person will participate in discussions with campus clients, clarifying project requirements and translating goals into innovative design ideas. They will help identify the best technological solutions for making those designs a reality, and draw on strong programming skills to carry them out. They will be proactive in finding opportunities for growth as well as existing needs, and develop innovative solutions in those areas. They will provide postproduction support.

Job Duties:

  • Interviews and collaborates with content experts, project managers, designers, database analysts, programmer/analysts and researchers to understand, translate, create and design systems and tools that provide a high-quality user experience.
  • Works on multiple projects at various stages of development and adjusts focus based on needs and priorities.
  • Develops functional prototypes to demonstrate concepts and to enable rapid iterative support for both evaluative research and evolutionary application development.
  • Partners with programmer/analysts to ensure that interactive techniques and technologies translate through to the final product or service.
  • Researches, tests, builds, and coordinates the integration of new projects to meet developed requirements.
  • Develops, deploys, and maintains software code (such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP) consistently striving to increase expertise in current and upcoming technologies.
  • Works in conjunction with technical staff to integrate custom solutions with existing systems and databases.
  • Installs, manages, integrates and customizes third party solutions to meet project requirements.
  • Conducts usability and validation testing of web projects.
  • Assists in the production and maintenance of technical documentation for projects.
  • Assists in the documentation and continual improvement of procedures for developing, deploying, and supporting Web-based solutions.
  • Understands and uses source control such as GIT.
  • Identifies and executes on opportunities to improve user experience and processes.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Consistently strives to increase levels of expertise in Internet technologies including markup languages such as HTML and XML, scripting and programming languages such as JavaScript and PHP, presentation languages such as CSS and XSLT.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with other technical staff.
  • Participate in software evaluations and assessments of new technologies.
  • Connect with industry peers to forge mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Shares skills and expertise with others and contributes to a collaborative, supportive work environment.
  • Serve as assigned on College Committees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor’s degree in either design or technology fields; relevant experience can serve as a substitute for education.

Experience

  • Experience developing web applications and an extensive understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with source control system (e.g. Git).
  • A background in higher education or in a not-for-profit environment would be beneficial but is not required.
