Bates Technical College is Hiring a SIMULATION LABORATORY PROGRAM TECHNICIAN - Temporary/Hourly Near Tacoma, WA

BATES TECHNICAL COLLEGE is seeking a an hourly, limited-term, Simulation Laboratory Program Technician to support our Allied Health program. This position works under the supervision of the Director of Nursing. The position will be responsible for the daily operation of the simulation lab and fundamental skills nursing lab in support of the nursing program. The Simulation Laboratory Technician is responsible for maintaining and operating the skills lab, simulation lab that includes computers, audio/video technology, manikins and all other simulation equipment. Under the supervision of the nursing faculty and the nursing program director, the Simulation Laboratory Technician promotes students’ learning and success through management of the simulation suites including the manikin set up and take down, application of moulage, manikin upkeep and upkeep of all simulation supplies and equipment, recording and play back of the simulation session. Simulation Laboratory Technician aids in creating an immersive learning environment for the students. This position requires regular and consistent attendance. This position has no responsibility for providing direct care to patients. This position reports directly to the Director of the Nursing Program and requires regular and consistent attendance.

Please Note:Full potential salary for this position is listed. Salaries at the top of the range are earned through longevity. Hourly starting rate is $32.32 to $36.65 depending on experience. Essential Functions 
  • Responsible for organizing and maintaining materials and equipment in both skills lab and simulation lab
  • Maintain inventory and ordering supplies 
  • Maintain, repair, and load Pyxis machine 
  • Maintains lab skills stations, equipment, and supplies identified by lab faculty
  • Maintain human simulators and lab equipment including and not limited to installation, updates/upgrades, troubleshooting, perform maintenance and coordinate repairs
  • Warrantee maintenance for all lab equipment
  • Assist with implementation of new technology
  • Assist in faculty training 
  • Collaborate with faculty for scenario building
  • Programing the patient scenarios into simulators
  • Assist faculty to assemble pre-simulation learning materials
  • Prepare scenario props and create scenario moulage
  • Set up and execute simulation experience to include simulator manipulations during scenario 
  • Orient students and faculty to labs to their use
  • Coordinate room/staff scheduling
  • Provide technical support to students 
  • Ensure simulation lab supplies are in stock and available for use
  • Responsible for clean-up, setup, and organization of labs to include laundry, appropriate disposal of sharps containers, and ensure equipment is functional, sanitary, and safe 
  • Maintain electronic medical records (EMR) system and orient students and faculty
  • Setup and maintain scanning system for medication safety administration
  • Research and participates in professional development, skill, certification, and any new emerging technologies
  • Demonstrate proper use of simulation models/equipment
  • Troubleshoot equipment failure in lab & classroom
  • Prepare appropriate programs of patient scenarios
  • Maintain computer lab capabilities to support program requirements
  • Provide technical support for simulation lab users
  • Participate in program meetings and activities 
  • Participate in professional development 
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff and administration of the nursing department and the college.
Non-Essential/Other Functions
  • Accountable for keeping personal development up-to-date; adding to skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the Bates Technical College courses, professional development committees, etc. 
  • Participate actively and collaboratively on committees for college as needed including but not limited to staff recruitment, college councils, etc.
  • Additional activities, duties and responsibilities may be added with or without notice to meet college needs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Knowledge in computer networking 
  • Skilled in staying current with new developments in the use of human patient simulation learning
  • Skilled in computer literacy to the level of word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, and data collection and health management systems
  • Ability to deliver excellent customer service to a diverse population of internal/external customers
  • Ability to recognize and correct hazards to ensure a safe working/learning environment
  • Ability to managing priorities/deadlines, planning/organizing skills (e.g. must exercise good judgement for the prompt completion of responsibilities; ability to organize, set priorities, coordinate activities, meet deadlines)
  • Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, hazards, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve the medical simulation platforms and equipment
  • Ability to be an effective team member and works well with diverse group of people
  • Ability to adapt and be comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment
  • Work independently without close supervision using independent judgement 
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with diverse internal and external audiences through college approved communication; must be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels under stressful conditions.

  • Model professional decorum, discretion and mutual respect within and outside of the college.

Supervisory Responsibilities 
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Conditions of Employment

  • This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by Bates Technical College local union.
  • This position is required to work on campus. 
Minimum Qualifications 
  • Associate Degree in Computer Science and two years of experience in a computer technology or health-related field; OR
  • High school diploma/GED and four years of experience years of experience in a computer technology or health-related field; AND
  • Must communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
Allowable Substitution
If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by Human Resources for comparability.

  • Previous experience in the healthcare industry
  • Related certifications
  • Working with Laerdal, SimMan, or similar product
  • Programming patient scenarios
  • Working with audio-visual equipment
  • Working with Network access and communication for different brands of technology
