Job SummaryBattelle’s Advanced Materials and Energetics Group is seeking to hire a R&D Chemist with organic and polymer synthesis experience for a hands-on wet chemistry laboratory position and be part of a team involved in a wide range of chemistry support with a focus on sustainability and biobased feedstocks for industrial products.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain laboratory with a commitment to safety with appropriate use of PPE, chemical storage and handling.
  • Perform hands-on organic chemistry with the ability to conduct lab-scale synthesis from a few grams to kilogram.
  • Perform characterization and interpret results on various analytical equipment such as NMR, FTIR, GC, etc.
  • Coordinate activities and collaborate with other researchers and technicians.
  • Ability to follow, adapt and develop synthetic approaches based on existing practices.
  • Conduct chemical literature searches with tools such as SciFinder.
  • Effective communication of results with the ability to write and contribute to internal and external client proposals and reports.
  • Participate and contribute to all phases of a research project – planning, execution, data collection, analysis and interpretation and reporting.
  • Expected to propose and develop concepts and solutions.
  • Emphasis on creativity, innovation and problem solving.
Key Qualifications
  • PhD in Chemistry, MS with 0-2 years, or BS with 2-5 years of hands-on organic chemistry/practical laboratory experience.
  • Research experience.
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of essential analytical instrumentation associated with, but not limited to FTIR, NMR, HPLC, liquid handler automation, and mass spectrometers.
  • Ability to generate and analyze data, prepare written reports of findings, and maintain a laboratory notebook.
  • Ability to present technical findings in their area of research.
  • General knowledge of laboratory safety.
  • Good communication and writing skills.
  • Must be eligible and able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Develop and contextually present information from numerous technical resources to support research objectives.
  • Experience with the following:
  • Polymers and polymerization
  • Oleochemistry (e.g., natural triglyceride oils, fats, waxes, fatty acids, glycerol and functional derivatives) as well as the basic chemistry of carbohydrates and proteins.
  • Familiarity with products such as lubricants, surfactants, solvents, plasticizers, coatings, polymer and polymer resins
  • Process scale-up
  • Formulation of industrial products
