Job SummaryBattelle is seeking a Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer (level 4) to work in the Electronic Warfare group within the National Security Division. The position is located at Battelle Headquarters in Columbus, OH.
The RF Engineer will be responsible for leading development of complex RF/microwave systems, for utilization in Communications and Electronic Warfare (EW) solutions. The applicant must have extensive experience in microwave design techniques, FPGA and embedded system development, radio signal processing, simulation tools and microwave test equipment. This position will work closely with antenna engineers on state-of-the-art phased array antennas, requiring a solid foundational understanding of antenna design and phased array applications including Electronic Beam Steering (EBS) and Direction Finding (DF). A successful candidate will be capable of making technical presentations to peers, program leadership, and customers and assist in new business development.
ResponsibilitiesThe candidate will provide technical leadership, subject matter expertise and individual execution within engineering projects requiring design, prototyping, analysis, testing, fabrication and integration of RF/microwave systems, into multi-disciplinary engineering solutions. These solutions provide essential capabilities to operators in a wide variety of domains including communications, signal intelligence, radar,cyber and EW.
Travel may be required. Responsibilities include:
  • Ability to work independently, as well as direct and coordinate work of multi-disciplinary engineering teams to assure the successful development of RF systems.
  • Mentor and train junior and mid-level engineers
  • Engineering design process development and maturation
  • Customer and sub-contractor coordination
  • Leading the creation of technical content for proposals and white papers
  • Create technical documentation, test plans and reports
  • Conduct experiments and testing in both a laboratory and field environment
Key QualificationsAbility to obtain/maintain a government security clearance (Must be a Sole US Citizen)
Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or related field 10 years of experience
  • Master’s degree in EE or related field 8 years of experience
  • PhD in EE or related field 5 years of experience
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
Expertise and Competencies8 years of experience are required in the following skills:
  • Microwave/RF system, subsystem and component analysis, design, prototyping and integration
  • MATLAB modeling and analysis of RF channels, EBS patterns, and DSP systems.
  • FPGA and embedded system development.
  • Development of Software Defined Radio (SDR).
  • Experience with microwave test equipment such as vector network analyzers, power meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, noise sources, multimeter, and signal sources
  • Technical writing for proposals, white papers, test plans and reports
  • Leadership of technical teams comprised of more than 3 people
Preferred QualificationsExpertise and Competencies
  • Experience with 3GPP 5GNR and O-RAN system design, integration, and test.
  • Experience with VITA-49 system design, integration, and test.
  • Familiarity with mobile cellular network equipment, deployment and industry practices.
  • Design, integration, and evaluation of Active Electronically Steered Antennas (AESAs)
  • Design of RF/microwave Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) and Card Carrier Assemblies (CCA)
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulation and modeling tools such as HFSS, CST, ADS, Genesys and/or AWR
  • ECAD design experience using software suites such as Cadance Virtuoso and Allegro, and Altium Designer
  • Familiarity with the setup and operation of military communication and EW equipment
  • Current US Government Security Clearance
