NATURE OF JOB:
This is skilled technical and supervisory work in surveying and engineering directing a survey crew. Work includes boundary and sectional survey retracement, right-of-way and topographic surveys, GPS control densification, 2nd and 3rd order leveling circuits, and construction stake-out for engineering projects. Assignments are performed under the general supervision of the County Surveyor.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs technical and supervisory duties involving the application of advanced surveying and engineering skills, techniques, and survey equipment.
• Supervises the maintenance and compilation of the county benchmark layer.
• Supervises and directs survey crew in topographical surveys, right-of-way location, boundary sectional retracement, drainage surveys, and construction layout utilizing conventional and robotic total stations, GPS receivers, conventional and digital levels, and remote sensing UAV/UAS (drones).
• Supervises and directs survey crews in hydrographic surveys and is responsible for the layout of dredging projects, associated spoil sites, and general construction projects.
• Assists draftsman persons in map preparation.
• Accurately compiles data and makes field computations to effectively perform survey duties.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Regular reliable full-time attendance as scheduled.
• The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible surveying experience, with at least two years in a supervisory capacity.
• College training may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester hours for each year of required experience, provided such training included twelve (12) semester hours of surveying and/or engineering related course work.
• Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language.
• Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
• A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:

• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
• Preferred: Survey Technician Level II or III from the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS)
• Preferred: FAA Part 107 drone pilot certification
• Preferred: LSIT, Geomatics and/or GIS Certificate, or Surveying and Geomatics degree candidate.

• Knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry and its application to field surveying computation.
• Skill in the use of surveying instrumentation and associated equipment.
• Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.
• Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in the use of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook is essential.
• Ability to perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately.
• Ability to read and interpret maps, legal descriptions, and other documents related to land surveying.
• Ability to perform technical computations, and compile survey data and statistics.
• Ability to teach, direct, supervise others effectively.
• Ability to test and calibrate surveying equipment.
• Sufficient physical stamina to work long hours outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed outdoors in varying and adverse weather; work in water, brush and ditches. Work requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).
 
This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations. 
 
Stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pulling, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Ability to frequently lift and carry equipment 25-50lbs. and on occasion up to 100lbs; manual dexterity and mobility; intermittent exertion when performing duties.
