We seek a dynamic, collaborative Science Laboratories Manager who oversees the operations and management of all science laboratories within the undergraduate science department in the School of Health and Natural Sciences (SHNS) and who is interested in preparing undergraduate students in the field of sciences.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Science Laboratories Manager oversees the operations and management of all science laboratories within the undergraduate science department. This position requires scientific application expertise, leadership, and management skills to ensure the smooth functioning of the laboratory facilities in support of departmental academic offerings.

This position reports to the Chair of the Undergraduate Science Department in the School of Health and Natural Sciences and is part of an academic department that promotes student learning, success, retention, and graduation in the natural sciences. The Science Department offers three bachelor's degrees (B.S., Biology, Forensic Science, and Medical Science). The ideal candidate will have student-centered learning/teaching and practical experience in natural science fields.

A minimum of an M.S. in natural sciences (or equivalent discipline) from an accredited institution is required. Successful teaching and practical experience with active learning and alternative pedagogies in the natural sciences at the undergraduate level is required. Experience with teaching introductory to advanced laboratory-based courses with small class sizes and frequent student interaction required. Demonstration of operational skills to support laboratory instrumentation is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of science laboratories, including procurement of equipment and supplies, maintenance of facilities and instruments, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols and regulations.
  • Coordinate annual safety training program and professional development opportunities for science department faculty and staff.
  • Assist Department Chair with annual budget preparation to support laboratory course material needs, equipment purchases, and maintenance.
  • Monitor department expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Maintain quality assurance measures to ensure high standards of laboratory safety, cleanliness, and functionality.
  • Oversee work-study student tasks and responsibilities.
  • Teach four courses (or equivalent) per academic year within the department as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison for laboratory operations between department faculty, staff, administrators, and other stakeholders.
  • Attend training as required.
  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned by the University.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the Department Chair to assist/orient adjunct faculty members who teach in the laboratory setting
  • Work Study Students
Job Requirements:
  • A minimum of an M.S. in natural science (or equivalent discipline) is required.
  • Undergraduate teaching experience in introductory and upper-level science courses is preferred.
  • Experience in laboratory management, preferably in an academic or research setting, is preferred.
  • Knowledge of science laboratory safety regulations and best practices.
  • Proficiency in budget planning and financial management.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of scientific equipment and instrumentation.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to adhere to University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and within FERPA and HIPAA guidelines.
  • All new employees must complete the FERPA, Anti-Harassment, and any other required online training within 15 days of employment.
