General Summary:
The Patient Care Technician II (PCT II) position is responsible for a wide variety of technical and clerical procedures. PCT II has frequent direct patient contact when performing phlebotomy, specimen collection and specimen transport. Utilizes computers for patients specimen ordering, accessioning and general data entry. The PCT II provides front line support and training of PCT 1 staff, students and new hires.
Responsibilities:
1. Mentorship Leads by example, abiding by all established policies, procedures, and standards of behavior. Conducts themselves with professionalism. Demonstrates compassion and respect for others. Remains calm in stressful situations. Provides guidance and support to PCT I and PCT II staff with daily tasks, education, training, difficult procedures/problems, heavy workload, etc. Assists in education of staff with new processes and procedures.
2. Technical Competence Independently performs, with appropriate documentation, all tasks including phlebotomy, waived testing and ECG in accordance with established policies and procedures. Consistently obtains and processes specimens following established protocols. Competently explains proper instructions for obtaining specimens. Verifies the identity of the patient and specimen. Accurately enters data and completes all required documentation. Maintains proficiency in all areas of outpatient services. Able to rotate to all OPSC sites which include the Main Campuses, and the off-sites.
3. Organization and Time Management Performs all tasks within standards for timeliness without reminder. Adjusts to varying workloads by effectively prioritizing workload to meet the needs of the department and the care of the patients. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Disposes of waste, replenishes stock and alerts appropriate personnel of low inventory situations.
4. Communication Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, nurses, physicians, and patients. Relays messages accurately, concisely and in a timely manner. Answers the telephone and conducts conversations in a professional manner, always using AIDET with patients and visitors. Demonstrates competency in appropriately completing a Safety variance report when appropriate. Follows through on all outstanding tests, procedures, assignments, or tasks and reports any incomplete assignments to ensure work is completed without interruption of service.
5. Performance Standards Consistently uses safe work practices including appropriate use of equipment and PPE. Maintains low error rate. Shows initiative in completing mandatory requirements, training, and educational assignments on time. Consistency in accomplishing tasks in a timely manner. Recognizes factors affecting specimen/test acceptability. Maintains confidentiality of information. Displays effective problem-solving skills. Abides by all Bayhealth policies and procedures.
6. Safety/Infection Prevention Ensures all Infection Prevention / Safety protocols are always followed. Disinfects work areas prior to end of each shift. Consistently uses safe work practices including appropriate use of equipment and PPE.
7. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
Required: Employed at Bayhealth for at least 1 year as a PCT1 or equivalent experience in other healthcare settings.
