Beaufort County Schools is Hiring a Part-Time Behavior Support Assistant Near Washington, NC

Employment in this position is effective August 15, 2024 through June 12, 2025. This is a part-time position (19 hours per week). Candidate must have an Associate Degree or have completed at least 48 semester hours of coursework. Classified employees must have, or be willing to obtain shortly after becoming employed, their CDL and they must maintain their CDL throughout their employment.

JOB TITLE:
BEHAVIOR SUPPORT ASSISTANT


STATUS: PARTTIME POSITION


GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Behavioral Support Assistant will provide interventions and strategies to students that are experiencing chronic and acute behavioral/emotional needs in order to improve the students’ overall behavioral functioning and provide an alternative to suspension. The Behavioral Support Assistant will also collaborate with school personnel regarding the implementation of various behavioral strategies and interventions. Must also be skilled in handling crises and rapidly developing behavioral needs of students. Reports to the Principal.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Work collaboratively with the student and school team to improve the student’s overall behavioral functioning and provide an alternative to suspension.
  • Conduct student observations in order to identify triggers and assist Individualized

Educational Plan (IEP)/school team with developing positive behavioral strategies and

interventions.

  • Provide behavioral interventions to assigned student while assisting the teacher(s) with

implementation of various strategies and interventions.

  • Maintain written documentation designed to highlight positive and negative student behaviors.
  • Submit required documentation weekly to supervisor (ie. ABC forms, Behavior frequency)
  • Implement and model effective classroom management techniques for teacher(s), school

staff, and school team.

  • Provide classroom management or other specialized behavioral management trainings to

individual groups or school teams as needed.

  • Assist IEP/school team with developing behavioral contracts and/or plans with

appropriate rewards and consequences.

  • Facilitate trigger/exit meetings to provide the school team with information regarding

student observations and suggested behavioral interventions and strategies.

  • Attend IEP/school team meetings to provide relevant information as needed.
  • Potentially serve as a lead interventionist if the use of CPI-approved physical

interventions is required.

  • Maintain an open and frequent line of communication with the teachers, Administration and School Counselor.
  • Obtain and Maintain CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention)/NCI (North Carolina Intervention) certification as required.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

2 year Associates Degree and/or relevant related experience. Degree in early childhood education and/or closely related field.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Physical Requirements:
Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.


Interpersonal Communication:
Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors. Must be able to maintain a calm and professional demeanor when communicating with an escalated student.


Technology:
Have working knowledge and proficient level of experience with Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Google documents.


Motor Coordination:
Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.


Manual Dexterity:
Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.


Interpersonal Temperament:
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.


Physical Communication:
Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone.
