Job Title: 911 Crisis - Call Diversion Specialist (CDS)
Department: Justice and Crisis Response Unit
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt—Full-time
Job Location: Saint Louis City Police Department 911 Dispatch Center
Reports To: Clinical Lead and/or JCRU Associate Director
Starting Pay: DOE

Position Summary

The primary goal of this position is to work in partnership with St. Louis City 911 call dispatchers to provide immediate telephone assistance to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis. The CDS will be transferred all diversion eligible calls believed to be related to a behavioral health crisis from the 911 Call Dispatchers. Working together with the 911 call dispatchers, the CDS will provide effective crisis intervention services including clinical assessments, when warranted, to determine and implement appropriate level of care and service to all callers. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in dealing with both internal and external customers. Will provide support to the 911 dispatch center and follow Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department Call Center policies. This position is onsite, and the CDS will be stationed in the St. Louis City 911 dispatch center.

Essential Functions:

  • Proficiently handles inbound call volume in call center environment that demands providing a high level of service within standardized time constraints.
  • Provides support to the 911 dispatch center and take calls that are behavioral health related.
  • Manages call times in an efficient and responsible manner. Able to finesse ambiguous situations presented by challenging callers.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in work habits and time management skills. Meets JCRU’s attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Performs high quality clinical assessment with excellent customer service skills. Displays courtesy and sensitivity when conducting telephone triage interviews with clients that are experiencing problems.
  • Prepares documentation in a proficient and professional manner. Efficiently and effectively enters information from callers into electronic database system.
  • Assists 911 dispatchers with identifying appropriate services to dispatch to CRU.
  • Assists with using BHR dispatch system to send non-police response clinicians to calls CDS cannot divert via phone.
  • Perform various other duties and functions as required or assigned within area of expertise or scope of the position.
Education, Experience, Skills Required, and Professional Characteristics:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in behavioral health, social services, or criminal justice related field and/or certified peer/recovery specialist; Qualified Mental Health Professional preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the St. Louis Area Mental Health Network, the Crisis Intervention Model, and the DSM-V.
  • Minimum of six months to two years’ experience in mental health field within the private or public sector.
  • Committed to ongoing professional and educational development. Participates in individual supervision, BHR training, JCRU specific training, monthly team meetings, functions, and events.
  • Must work well as part of a team and individually with other employees. Must be flexible with work hours and special requests from supervisors.
  • Clinicians will work with numerous agencies and will need to meet any regulatory requirements of external partners, including vaccinations and background checks as required.
  • Thorough clinical assessment skills.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to multiple protocols for handling of calls.
  • Telephone skills with excellent customer service techniques.
  • Ability to use computer system and talk on phone while typing.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to change quickly and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
