Position Title: ELL/Language Specialist

Department: ELL Department

Reports to: ELL Department Director (and site administrator, as applicable)

Job Definition:

The ELL/Language Specialist will provide comprehensive and systematic support for the educational experience and academic achievement of English Language Learners and emergent bilingual students. This specialist role is a non-evaluative position supporting students, families, staff, and administrators, and fulfills teaching, case management, collaborative professional development, and staff guidance that lead to improved outcomes for linguistically-diverse students.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Plan and implement a language program of study following state and district goals to meet the individual needs and strengths of students.
  • Identify individual student needs by continuous assessment of their linguistic and academic
  • Use student needs to plan and modify instruction and
  • Write standards-based instructional plans that incorporate a variety of evidence-based methods and strategies.
  • Teach, team teach, and model instructional practices that address all language
  • Support and guide classroom teachers in explicit language lesson planning and language-embedded content units.
  • Provide consultation and support to building administrators in the identification, implementation, and analysis of effective language strategies for the building’s specific student population.
  • Collaborate with school staff and families to increase family engagement in a manner consistent with building, department, and district goals.
  • Provide professional development and training to staff on evidence-based strategies for serving linguistically-diverse students and families.
  • Provide consultation at individual student team meetings (IEPs, etc) on students’ linguistic progress and on adaptations to academic practices, interventions, and goals to meet the needs of the language learner.
  • Maintain all department paperwork, files, and records up-to-date and consistent with district, state, and federal requirements.
  • Collect, analyze, and review student achievement data with the purpose of providing feedback to students, families, staff, and administrators on progress toward academic, linguistic, and sociocultural goals.
  • Participate in professional development activities, attend meetings, and act as a liaison between the department and assigned school.

Working Conditions:

The employee works with groups of students and one a one-on-one basis. Students include those who may be physically and mentally handicapped, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and culturally different. Supervision and instructional responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand for up to 45 consecutive minutes and move rapidly to intervene in situations where a student’s safety is being jeopardized. The supervision may also occur during times of inclement weather. The employee needs to be able to lift materials, boxes or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of course work satisfying the requirement for issuance of a valid Oregon Teaching License with appropriate endorsement in the designated assignment.

Certification and Licensing:
