JOB DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, the Custodial Assistant II supervises, makes adjustments in workload assignments for the custodial crew, is responsibility to run team clean under the direction of the Custodial Foreman, and personally performs routine custodial, repair and maintenance work on district-owned buildings, grounds and equipment. The employee works closely with the Custodial Foreman. The Custodial Assistant II works under the supervision of the Custodial Foreman and/or Custodial Supervisor.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Prepares work schedules under the supervision of the Custodial Foreman and sees that work is done in accordance with instructions and in a timely manner.
  2. Sweeps, mops, auto scrubs, and vacuums, vinyl, linoleum, tile, wood floors, polished concrete or other surfaces.
  3.  Vacuums carpets, walk-off mats, and area rugs in school, offices, halls and rooms.
  4. Cleans and dusts walls, furniture, woodwork, lockers and other equipment.
  5. Picks up papers and other refuse on grounds and sweeps walks and entrances. 
  6. Maintains equipment used in the course of work and cleans thoroughly after use.
  7. Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and locker rooms daily/nightly, which includes scrubbing toilets, sinks and drinking fountains, washing mirrors, walls, and filling dispensers.
  8. Reports needed repair work to Custodial Foreman.
  9. Performs minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment.
  10. Assists custodians and substitute custodians in doing their work properly by giving instructions, training new personnel, and inspecting their assigned areas.
  11. Inspects building for fire, sanitary and safety hazards.
  12. Assures that all assigned tasks of the night crew have been accomplished at the end of the shift and secures the building.
  13. Washes, vacuums or dusts windowsills, showcases, counter tops, exposed beams, skylights, fire alarm bells, fire sprinkler pipes, and other surfaces.
  14. Assures that all District patrons in the building are served promptly, courteously, and according to District policies and practices. Meets and assists members of the public who have permission to use the facilities.
  15. Performs support services for special events and other activities at the school. This activity involves setting up chairs and/or tables, positioning bleachers, placing or removing mats in the gymnasium, unlocking doors and courteously responding to inquiries from students, teachers, and others utilizing the facilities.
  16. Removes snow and ice from walkways as required by weather conditions. This may involve flexing the employee’s assigned shift to accomplish required tasks.
  17. Expected to supervise or manage one or more Custodian Crew I staff, sometimes in a team clean scenario.
  18. Required to work days for Custodial Foreman to cover for absences and leave.
  19. Required to provide contact phone numbers for call out lists and respond to after hour and weekend emergencies such as fire alarms, security alarms, snow removal, water leaks and vandalism. This duty may require adjustment of regular work hours necessary to resolve the issue.
  20. Fulfills other related duties as assigned.
  21. Fulfills performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required for the position.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This employee works primarily indoors during the late afternoon and evening hours. However, some outdoor responsibilities may occur during inclement weather such as snow removal. The employee must be able to walk extensively during the assigned shift to perform the essential functions of the position. This employee also needs to be able to lift materials, trashcans, waxes, equipment and tables weighing up to 50 pounds and/or maneuver equipment, supplies and furniture weighing up to 100 pounds. Heavy lifting of items weighing above 50 pounds should be performed in a team-lift arrangement or with the aid of tools such as handcarts or dollies. During the summer and other periods when students are not in the building, the night custodians may be assigned to work the day shift along with the regular day crew. 

This employee has requests for various types of service from staff, students, public and parents. Some of these requests include refilling paper dispensers, cleaning cafeteria spills, replacing light bulbs, hanging pictures, setting up meeting rooms, removing insects, and cleaning up human and animal waste. It is important that this employee enjoy working with students, staff, parents, and the public. The employee must also be capable of climbing a ladder in order to install lights, make roof repairs, clean out rain gutters, and retrieve playground and athletic equipment. Certain emergency situations, and team clean may require changing work hours, days and work locations. Therefore, the supervisor has the authority to adjust the assigned shift hours, days, and work location for this employee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine building and grounds maintenance.
  • Operation of heating plant and equipment and basic shut offs.
  • Safety practices.
  • Understanding of practices, policies and procedures in the custodial manual.

Skills & Abilities:

Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to bend, twist, stoop, walk extensively, climb, reach, carry, lift, push, pull, drag, and stand for up to 8 hours per day. • Lay out work and estimate time, tools and materials used.
  • Learn the operation of equipment used in the work, as required by the position.
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing in accordance with educational standards.
  • Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Obtain or possess a valid Oregon driver's license and maintain an insurable status for automobile and liability coverage, as required by the position.
  • Adhere to the district requirement for a drug-free workplace.
  • Maintain current standards regarding handling of blood borne pathogens, asbestos, hazardous chemicals, and following IPM on insects/pests. 
  • Learn to appropriately handle bodily fluids.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma and up to one year of advanced training/experience in the specific job requirements.

The position requires general knowledge of some technical procedures or work activity. Working knowledge of School District practices or basic policies may be necessary. Job proficiency can be acquired in six months to one year.
