Summary

The Board of Benton County Commissioners is looking for an alternate member to fill in as needed for the Benton County Board of Equalization.
The Board of Equalization must meet in open session on July 15th or within 14 days of certification of the county assessment rolls; whichever is later and must meet at least 3 days during the 28-day session. They will reconvene when petitions exceed twenty-five, or ten percent of number of appeals filed in the preceding year, whichever is greater.
The appointment is for a 3-year term.

Example of Duties

The Boards' responsibility is to ensure that all properties are valued at 100% of market value and, accordingly, that comparable properties are assessed at comparable values.
County Boards of Equalization ensure all parcels of property are valued correctly by:

  • Ruling on appeals filed by property owners who believe their property has been incorrectly assessed;
  • examining county assessment roll and "equalizing" property, and;
  • approving certain corrections discovered by the county assessor after the roll has been closed and certified for tax purpose.
Board members are paid per diem, and those members residing outside of Prosser are paid mileage to and from the Prosser Courthouse.

Qualifications

Desired applicants: Must be a resident of Benton County and attend the Department of Revenue training school within a year of appointment.
General knowledge of the county, background in appraisal and/or real estate is extremely helpful.
Applicant may not be a county elected official or related to an elected official and cannot have been employed in the Assessor's Office for a period of two years before making application to the Board of Equalization.
