DescriptionThe Senior Executive Director (SED) of Sponsored Programs and Outreach has the primary responsibility of overseeing the work of key outward-facing College programs, including the Berea College Appalachian Fund, Brushy Fork Leadership Institute, Grow Appalachia, and Educational Talent Search. This individual will ensure that the work of these units remains consistent with and reflective of the College’s Great Commitments, particularly the commitment to “engage Appalachian communities, families, and students in partnership for mutual learning, growth, and service.” The SED will support the units in seeking external funding to sustain their operations while paying special attention to program scope and enterprise risks associated with these programs, as their work extends far beyond campus. This individual will also seek opportunities for close collaboration with campus entities, including identifying ways in which the outreach programs can support the educational goals and experiences of Berea students by engaging them with the College’s extensive network of partners in central Appalachia. Additionally, the SED will oversee the Office of Government Grant Services team, ensuring compliance with federal and state funding regulations, proper implementation of grant funding, and successful collaboration with the faculty and staff principal investigators of each grant.

- Oversee Grow Appalachia, Brushy Fork Leadership Institute, the Appalachian Fund, Educational Talent Search, other similar entities, ensuring that the work of those units remains consistent with the College’s Great Commitments.
- Support each program in seeking external funding to sustain their operations in collaboration with Government Grant Services and Alumni, Communications and Philanthropy.
- Develop, implement, and oversee internal processes that ensure excellent and compliant stewardship of external funding.
- Develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures that mitigate risk for the College, as the work of the outreach programs extends far beyond campus.
- Seek opportunities for engaging Berea students with the outreach programs and their network of longstanding non-profit partners in central Appalachia.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration with campus entities, including the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center, the Center for Excellence in Learning through Service, and Entrepreneurship for the Public Good.
- Oversee the Office of Government Grant Services team, ensuring compliance with federal and state funding regulations, proper implementation of grant funding, and successful collaboration with the faculty and staff principal investigators of each grant.
Typical QualificationsEducation required to ensure success in this position:
- Master’s degree or bachelor’s degree and relevant experience required.
- A minimum of 6 years of experience in a high-level administrative position in higher education or a non-profit organization.
- A minimum of 6 years of experience working in partnership with communities and organizations in Appalachian Regional Commission-designated at-risk and distressed counties.
- A minimum of 5 years of direct experience working with federal and state grant funding.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills required.
- Demonstrated competencies in non-profit strategic programming and fiscal management.
- Ability to effectively engage, develop, and supervise staff.
- Ability to build relationships with community leaders and partners.
- Knowledge of the Appalachian region and cultures.
- Experience overseeing federal and state grant funding.
- Ability to cultivate relationships with public and private funding partners.
- Strong collaboration skills.
- Basic computer skills with Microsoft Word and Excel experience and basic accounting knowledge and skills are required.
- Driver’s license.
- Ability to navigate campus, public buildings, and grounds.
- Ability to travel via vehicle to partner sites on occasion.
- Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors.
- Occasional day and overnight travel as well as outdoor visits to partner sites.
- Standard office equipment.
- Ability to operate a vehicle.
