Bergen Community College is Hiring a Career and Academic Advisor Near Paramus, NJ

The Career and Academic Advisor will advise and counsel students on their pathway to FANH degrees. The advisor will provide academic and FANH career pathway guidance and support each participant’s learning, internship obtainment, degree completion, transfer to four-year colleges, and career advancement goals.
Position SummaryResponsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Engage BCC students, especially underserved and underrepresented students and/or neurodiverse individuals in Food, Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Human Sciences (FANH) career clusters.
  • Advise and assist on-campus and online students in the selection of a degree program, course selection and registration, and successful completion of degree/program requirements.
  • Provide holistic and proactive advising for students, guiding students throughout their time at the College; assists students in exploring options, setting goals, and creating a plan to achieve desired outcomes; communicates proactively with students throughout all phases of the student experience.
  • Identify and intervene to support academically at-risk or struggling students and refers students to appropriate college resources to support the successful completion of their goals.
  • Monitor the academic performance and progress of assigned students and supports their persistence, graduation, and success through outreach, intervention, and collaboration with relevant support services.
  • Advise students transferring to four-year institutions, including educating students on the NJ Statewide Transfer Agreement, tools such as NJ Transfer, and the transfer process.
  • Support student career exploration and inquiries and stays up to date on the available career resources of at the institution.
  • Help prepare students to find internships, scholarships, job shadow, and other experiential career explorations in FANH pathways.
  • Facilitate workshops on college success and develops initiatives to enhance retention and graduation rates of students.
  • Collaborate with administration to set and reach individual and unit goals; measures and tracks performance against objective; contributes to a departmental annual assessment report; and fully support grant outcomes.
  • Participate in internal and external professional development opportunities which encourages continuous professional growth and development as an advisor.
  • Maintain working knowledge of services offered by the college and the grant and assists students in fully utilizing all the resources available to them at the college.
  • Perform other duties as required. Administrative and Other Duties
Special Skills And QualificationsEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, Business, STEM, Agriculture, or related field is required. (Master’s preferred).
Experience: Two years counseling experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrates computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Workspace, and database technologies. Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills are required. Must be able to work with a diverse population of students and staff.

Salary And Benefits
  • Annual Salary is $55,000.
  • NJ Educators Health Plan with free Vision and Dental. NJ State Pension plan.
  • 15 vacation days, 15 sick days, 4 personal days, 2 floating holidays, all designated holidays and 5 non-designated holidays a year. 3 Partial Sick Days.
