Berkeley Lab is Hiring a Beamline Scientist for Infrared Biospectroscopy Near Berkeley, CA

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s ( LBNL ) Advanced Light Source ( ALS ) Division has an opening for a Beamline Scientist for Infrared Biospectroscopy to drive biological and environmental research at the ALS Infrared Beamlines, including Beamlines 1.4, 2.4, and 5.4. The Beamline Scientist will work creatively in a multidisciplinary team to enhance the state-of-the-art microspectroscopy and nanospectroscopy beamline instruments and conduct cutting-edge infrared experiments in collaboration with the ALS user community.
The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard X-ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,500 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft X-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art X-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our growing team!
What You Will Do Research Scientist:
  • Train, support, and collaborate with ALS users to perform state-of-the-art infrared experiments.
  • Maintain and develop beamline equipment within the IR Program, including Beamlines 1.4, 2.4, and 5.4, as required to meet the emerging needs of the ALS user community.
  • Practice Integrated Safety Management (ISM) in all work aspects, including managing the biosafety requirements at the infrared beamlines.
  • Develop collaborations and partnerships with new and existing ALS users, and work with the staff of the Berkeley Synchrotron Infrared Structural Biology (BSISB) Imaging program.
  • Serve the broader scientific community through expertise sharing, committee participation, review activities, and conference/workshop engagement.
  • Document and communicate your work, including publishing results in peer-reviewed scientific and technical journals, and presenting research at workshops and conferences.
