Central and Unit Based Clinical Nurse Educator Position Description

Role Description

The Central and Unit Based Clinical Nurse Educator is a leader of the discipline of nursing and provides the professional practice expertise that supports the nursing staff in achieving clinical excellence through delivery of evidenced based nursing practice. In partnership with members of the nursing leadership team, s/he is responsible to represent the voice of nursing through consistent translation of the department’s mission, vision, and values across all areas, and contribute to the success of the hospital mission.

The Clinical Nurse Educator establishes effective interdisciplinary partnerships that serve to build and sustain a healthy work environment characterized by effective systems and care processes which advance nursing practice, knowledge development, clinical scholarship and leadership development. Creating the conditions for a healthy work environment encompass teaching, coaching, mentoring, and supporting an educated, well-informed, diverse workforce and creating opportunities for clinical inquiry, scholarship, professional development and meaningful recognition.

The Clinical Nurse Educator is accountable for ensuring that nursing practice and patient care programs meet regulatory and safety requirements, are patient-family centered, culturally and age sensitive, evidenced-based, fiscally responsible, built on sound processes, leverage current technology, and produce desired outcomes. The skills required to accomplish this work include the ability to strategically partner, plan, and prioritize in a way that synergistically potentiates the work of the department as a whole. S/He must possess a high level of skill in relation to communication, collaboration, effective decision making, and authentic leadership and is accountable for his/her own professional and leadership development through engagement in life-long learning opportunities.

Principle Duties

Clinical Inquiry

  • The ongoing process of questioning and evaluating practice to provide informed, evidence based care.

1. Formulates and raises vital clinical questions and issues clearly and precisely

2. Brings practice issues to the attention of others when assistance is needed to facilitate resolution

3. Utilizes reliable sources for locating current standards of practice, research, evidence reports and clinical guidelines

4. Establishes and maintains a system for assessment of quality nursing care that complies with evolving regulatory agency requirements.

5. Uses QI tools and methodologies to assess performance and identify gaps between current unit & best practice related to key clinical outcome measures

6. Provides leadership in generating clinical inquiry and critical thinking among staff by developing mechanisms that effectively translate available data, e.g., pathway variances, QI audits, and research findings, into information used by staff for clinical decision making.

7. Systematically evaluates the quality, cost, and effectiveness of nursing practice through identification of nursing phenomena and/or systems issues appropriate for study.

Clinical Scholarship

  • Those activities which systematically advance the teaching, research, and practice of nursing through rigorous inquiry.

1. Participates in the development and sustainability of standards for professional practice and nursing education programs designed to facilitate high quality patient care.

2. Actively builds effective interdisciplinary relationships to assure dialogue around patient care and issues in an effort to enhance evidence based, outcome driven patient care

3. Contributes to the design of a continuing education curriculum that is evidence based and reflects contemporary and innovative nursing practice

4. Creates learning opportunities to expand the evidence based knowledge and skills of nursing staff.

5. Fosters improvement in patient care by helping professional staff develop systematic ways of studying and resolving clinical/systems challenges.

6. Serves as a resource for interpretation and integration of current policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines into practice within area of nursing expertise.

7. Maintains own clinical expertise and practices as an autonomous clinical decision maker within their scope of licensure, certification, and training.

Teaching / Learning

1. Assesses individual, unit based, and department educational needs and develops evidence based educational curricula to support accomplishment of annual educational goals

2. Collaborates with directors and managers to develop and implement a staff orientation, competency, continuing education and in-service programs that support safe practice.

3. Contributes to the formulation of the curricula aimed at supporting the development of bedside team leaders, charge nurses, preceptors, super-users, clinical champions

4. Develops and conducts educational programs designed to support and enhance their understanding of the quality improvement process, evidence based practice and its link to enhanced patient care outcomes.

5. Incorporates principles of adult learning and multigenerational differences in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs

6. Teaches classes related to the care of patients in the practice area directly related to role assignment ensuring that education program materials include culturally appropriate and age specific content.

7. Uses instructional materials from various media and formats as appropriate to learning environment

8. Assists staff to utilize quality improvement data to drive practice changes and achieve optimal patient outcomes

9. Recommends changes in educational goals, priorities, and/or strategies based on evaluation of effectiveness of educational programming using process and outcome data.

10. Facilitates the implementation of new health care technology through design of effective training programs and evaluation monitoring.

11. Provides educational opportunities that benefit nurses at all stages of their career development and tailors teaching strategies appropriate to learner needs.

12. Acts as an effective role model and resource for nursing students and clinical affiliations

13. Demonstrates engagement in lifelong learning and independently identifies own learning needs; participates in educational activities to enable competent performance of assigned duties

14. Shares new knowledge or practice outcomes at professional conferences and/or publishes in peer-review journals.

4. Collaborates with unit manager/director to contribute to staff performance reviews and selection of new staff and internal transfer candidates based upon evaluation of their qualifications and skills in relation to patient care needs.

5. Leads committees, work groups and/or projects related to the implementation of educational activities and quality improvement work focused on enhancing nursing practice, systems, patient care outcomes

6. Participates in change process and development of innovative solutions to clinical issues that improve patient care, the work environment, and patient and staff satisfaction

7. Supports the integration of quality, audit, evaluation data and research into practice and educational programs

8. Facilitates teambuilding and leadership development and seeks out opportunities to serve as change leader for assigned practice areas

9. Creates an environment that recognizes, encourages and rewards excellent clinical nursing practice performance.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

Experience:

  • Two years of progressively responsible education and/or leadership experience
  • Five years acute care nursing experience with 2 of the 5 preferably in practice area directly related to role assignment

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

  • Current RN licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • BLS & ACLS certification
  • ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP instructor level certification is required based on practice area within 3 months of employment.
  • Specialty or educator certification (NPD/RN-BC) required within one year of hire or as soon as eligible per national standards

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to apply principles of adult learning to the development of effective staff, patient and/or family education programs. Experience in program development and evaluation. Analytical ability to solve systems issues, interpret available data and design/conduct quality improvement projects. Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving ability. Organizational skill to appropriately set priorities and efficiently complete work. Advanced verbal, interpersonal, and writing skills in order to perform required leadership duties. Demonstrated ability as an effective public speaker and presenter. Computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access and enter data from computerized information systems e.g. Meditech and Microsoft Office programs. Willingness to work flexible hours to meet educational needs of the staff. Physical ability to perform core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands for patient and staff populations regularly served. Occasional travel may be required to facilitate collaboration with entities across BID system or attend external meetings.
