Job Description:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Exemplifies the values of New England Baptist Hospital and the ROSE philosophy.

2. Complies with all New England Baptist Hospital policies and the Code of

Excellence. Maintains a safe and clean work environment.

3. Department Specific Responsibilities, as instructed by nursing and rehabilitation

staff:

a. Performs routine bed mobility, transfers, and ambulation with/without an

assistive device in safe manner

b. Measures walker, crutches, and canes for routine ambulation

c. Safely positions patient in bed and in a chair/commode for comfort and skin

integrity

d. Understands all orthopaedic precautions (anterior, posterior, direct lateral,

total knee, spine, trochanteric) and weight bearing status, utilizes appropriate

precautions with patients for safe mobility

e. Safely applies ice packs and/or heating pads to patients

f. Applies constant passive motion machine (CPM) safely, knee and shoulder

after first PT session

g. Safely applies CAMOped as indicated

h. Safely applies/monitors all equipment for patient, i.e. knee immobilizer, back

brace, external compression device, O2, IV pole, foley catheter, drains, etc.

i. Performs routine exercise programs with patients

j. Performs routine activities of daily living with patients

k. Measures/monitors vital signs when appropriate l. Demonstrates proper body mechanics and lifting techniques with all duties/tasks m. Maintains patient privacy and modesty at all times n. Demonstrates verbal communication to nursing and rehabilitation staff regarding patient status and responses to interventions o. Adheres to and complies with all HIPPA regulations p. Adheres to universal precautions and all infection control policies and procedures

4. Performs other related duties as required.

5. Completes annual safety review.

6. Plans time away from work appropriately:

a. Arrives and leaves at designated times.

b. Uses unplanned earned time appropriately.

Decision Making:

Makes decisions based on specific instructions, standard practices, and/or established procedures. Any deviations from these require review/approval from a higher level of authority.

Problem Solving:

Addresses problems that are routine, somewhat repetitive and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures and by identifying opportunities for process improvements.

Independence of Action:

Works within general instructions and procedures. Work is monitored by supervisor/manager.

Patient Contact:

Regular, day-to-day contact; both face-to-face and hands-on (having close contact within three feet for at least five minutes). Examples: physicians, clinical nurses, phlebotomist, medical assistants, PFT tech, and x-ray tech.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Has no supervisory responsibilities

Fiscal Responsibility:

Has no budget responsibility.

EDUCATION

Required: High School Graduate or Equivalent, Non-degree Certificate Training

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Preferred: Certified Nursing Assistant

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Written Communications:

Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions.

Oral Communications:

Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.

Knowledge:

Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required.

Team Work:

Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.

Customer Service

Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
