Job Summary:
Assists pharmacists in filling and preparation of inpatient medication orders and outpatient prescriptions. Delivers medication to patient care areas, and posts charges/credits for medication. Orders products from pharmacy wholesaler if assigned by Pharmacy Manager. Assists with training of new technicians as assigned by Pharmacy Manager.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Perform all functions and duties of a Pharmacy Service Representative to ensure prompt service in the Pharmacy Department.
2. Perform computer entry of prescription information including but not limited to: patient search, prescriber search, drug selection, prescription interpretation & entry, insurance billing and basic problem resolution.
3. Accept customer and prescription information required to process new and refill prescriptions, including refill authorization from doctor offices where permitted by state law.
4. Retrieve the appropriate medication from inventory where permitted by state law.
5. Create prescription labels and put them on prescription containers where permitted by state law.
6. Place medication into prescription containers where permitted by state law.
7. Complete paperwork related to filling prescriptions and input customer and prescription data into the computer system where permitted by law.
8. Assist with maintaining the Pharmacy department by keeping it clean and in order.
9. Assist in inventory management processes including: order review, inventory returns, restocking shelves, and physical inventory preparation.
10. Performs simple nonsterile compounding per USP <795> and state law.
11. Ensures smooth work flow in work area and that all assigned tasks are completed at
the end of shift. All identified problems, if they cannot be corrected by the employee, will be reported to the Pharmacist.
12. Delivery of medications to discharging patients per Pharmacist’s requests
13. Other duties as assigned by the Pharmacist or Pharmacy Retail Manager
Minimum Education, Training and Experience:
A.High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
B.Must be knowledgeable of medications (dosage forms, brand and generic names).
C.Required: Kentucky Board of Pharmacy registration certificate for Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern. (Within 30 days of hire date if you are a new registrant. If previously registered you must have registration upon hire)
D.Retail Pharmacy Tech:
Certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) preferred.
