Stipend: $8,251 a year (675 hours of service)- This position serves St. Lucie County.

Some positions qualify for an education award (~$2,800) upon completion of service.

Position Overview: Did you know that students who do not read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school? Our goal is to help all St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee County children become proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade and give them a better start to their futures. If you are passionate about education and literacy or are looking for a way to improve your community, join us and make a difference in the lives of preschool and elementary students.

Become a BBBS Reads tutor and help struggling readers, Kindergarten to 3rd grade students, get on track for reading at grade level. We'll provide training to get you started and ongoing coaching as you work through your 11-month term of service. Our members serve 15-20 hours per week for a total of 675 hours of service.

Responsibilities

• Work one-on-one with students in VPK or in Kindergarten through third grade who need extra support in learning to read. Tutors work with 10-12 students in 30-minute sessions three times a week during school hours.
• Monitor student progress, plan and set goals.
• Attend 8 days of mandatory training prior to service with students, plus additional required monthly training sessions throughout the year.
• Participate in site and program sponsored activities (i.e community fairs, family nights, etc.)

Qualifications

• Age 17 or older by the program start date
• Possess a high school diploma or a GED by the program start date
• Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
• Ability to work with diverse personalities and adapt to the school environment.
• Strong interest in education specifically in helping VPK and elementary students
• Dedication to community service
• Able to commit to 11 months of service
• Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
• Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated and professional
• Willing to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff
• Excellent time management and decision-making skills.
