Job DescriptionAs a Cook Apprentice, incumbents will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, alongside experienced culinary professionals, and gain valuable skills in the field of culinary arts.Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation and presentation of high-quality meals and dishes, ensuring that they meet the standards of the Biltmore. You will be expected to work collaboratively with the culinary team, follow recipes, and learn about various cooking techniques, ingredients, and culinary traditions. You will also be responsible for maintaining a clean and organized kitchen and ensuring that all equipment and tools are in good working condition. Assist in the preparation and cooking of various dishes, following established recipes and procedures
Help with the preparation of ingredients, including cutting, chopping, and measuring
Learn to use various kitchen equipment and tools, including: ovens, range, knives, mixers, slicers, food processors, blenders and mixers
Assist in plating and garnishing dishes for service
Help with cleaning and organizing the kitchen, including washing dishes, wiping down surfaces, and sweeping/mopping floors
Learn about food safety and sanitation practices, including proper storage and handling of food items
Work collaboratively with other members of the culinary team, including chefs, cooks, and other apprentices
Attend training sessions and workshops to further develop culinary skills and knowledge
Achieve proficiency on established competency skills checklist while pursuing Certificate in Culinary Studies.
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds
Willing learn and take direction from experienced culinary professionals
Possess strong work ethic, positive attitude and be able to work effectively in a team environment
Interest in developing a keen eye for detail
Must be able to follow recipes accurately and make adjustments as needed based on feedback from chefs and supervisors
Must have a strong sense of personal hygiene and be able to maintain a clean and sanitary work environment.
Completion of Servsafe by end of 2,000 hours or program completion required.
Must be willing to work in different areas of the kitchen and assist with a variety of tasks as needed
Must have a passion for food and be willing to learn about different cuisines and cooking styles
Must be willing to take constructive feedback and use it to improve skills and performance
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours per day
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, and twist as needed to perform kitchen tasks
Must have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
Must have good vision and be able to read and follow recipes and instructions
Must be able to work in a hot and humid environment, with exposure to steam, heat, and potentially hazardous equipment and chemicals
